Michael Moorcock is best known for his stories about Elric and several other fantasy characters, lumped together as "The Eternal Champion" series. Although von Bek is officially part of that story cycle, it stands way above the rest. Moorcock elegantly manages to use the historical setting to his advantage, and one notices that he has read his Romanticists with care. In a style that echoes the writing of that time but is more easily accessible we get an engaging adventure story with philosophical background. The adventures of Ulrich von Bek cleverly uses allegory to illuminate the impact philosophical developments had on our history. The volume does also contain a second novel dealing with the adventures of a von Bek descendant, but although still clever, it is not nearly as good. It sports cunning descriptions about life as a con artist and some observations on alchemy, but the philosophical elements take a backseat to let the adventure story play out. But on the whole, the book makes for an excellent read. (Dies ist eine Amazon.de an der Uni-Studentenrezension.)
