Synopsis

This text provides a comprehensive guide to accessing Oracle databases with Visual Basic. It shows the reader how to use ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) and Oracle Objects for OLE (OO4O) in an object oriented VB program. It also looks at PL/SQL - the language of stored procedures and triggers, and examines how to pass parameters to or return result sets from stored procedures. Throughout the book, the text combines theory and hands on practice. The reader also gets the opportunity to build an application which shows how to guarantee data integrity with OO4O and ADO, using transaction control and stored procedures.

The book combines theory and hands-on practice. Not just code snippets, but complete programs and applications. The SQL and PL/SQL chapters double as reference. There is also a complete reference to Oracle Objects for OLE, and ADO. When the reader has finished the final App s/he will be ready to use VB and Oracle to tackle real world problems.

A good start 9. Juni 2000

This book is an excellent starting point if you are new to Oracle, but you will need a better Oracle reference the further you go. It lays a good OO4O foundation, touches on Oracle functions, and shows some stored procs and ADO techniques. Most WROX books are well worth the money, and this is no exception. My only beef is that they call it a "programmer's reference", when in fact it is more like a beginner's tutorial. Still, it is a good, helpful book.

I think the book helped out on getting me started, but when it was time to use the advanced techniques (i.e. returning a recordset from a procedure), the sample codes didn't work. My advise...either stick with MS-SQL Server or use JAVA/JDBC with Oracle. VB and Oracle were never ment to be for each other. If you think that MS-SQL is not able to handle the load, you don't know it enough. I don't think Mr. Trietsch is to blame. After all, there are hardly any source for Oracle with VB.

This book will sharpen your VB skill especially when it deals with OOP, but you really want to get it for the wealth of information about Oracle.

We got a few copies of the book and distributed them among our programmers. Various members of the team had different skill that needed to be sharpened. Some needed a refresher course in SQL, others who came from legacy systems and learned only the basics of VB got a bit about OOP, all needed to learn about stored procedures and PL/SQL. This simple and short book gave us all of that and much more.

We have opted to use ADO as our conduit to the database. The book gives us a complete reference to ADO and 3 chapters guided us in its use with Oracle. It starts with simple Recordsets and moves all the way to writing robust code using stored procedures and ADO.

We've used the code in the book as a staring point to our project.

If you have limited shelf space and need just one book, this is the book to have

A must have for Oracle VB Development
An excellent detailed book. Clearly demostrates the power of VB and Oracle (working together) with real world examples. A first of it's kind.
