Pressestimmen

“Pitch perfect. . . . Darkly, rippingly funny. . . . Egan possesses a satirist’s eye and a romance novelist’s heart.”
The New York Times Book Review

“At once intellectually stimulating and moving. . . . Like a masterful album, this one demands a replay.”
The San Francisco Chronicle

“A new classic of American fiction.”
Time

“Audacious, extraordinary.”
Philadelphia Inquirer

“A spiky, shape-shifting new book. . . . A display of Egan’s extreme virtuosity.”
The New York Times

“Wildly ambitious. . . . A tour de force. . . . Music is both subject and metaphor as Egan explores the mutability of time, destiny, and individual accountability post-technology.”
O, The Oprah Magazine

“The smartest book you can get your hands on.”
Los Angeles Times

“A rich and unforgettable novel about decay and endurance, about individuals in a world as it changes around them. . . . [Egan] is one of the most talented writers today.”
The New York Review of Books

“It ends in the same place it starts, except that everything has changes, including you, the reader.”
The New Republic

“Clever. Edgy. Groundbreaking. . . . Features characters about whom you come to care deeply as you watch them doing things they shouldn't, acting gloriously, infuriatingly human.”
The Chicago Tribune

“Egan’s bravura fifth book samples from different eras (the glory days of punk; a slick, socially networked future) and styles (sly satire, moving tragedy, even PowerPoint) to explore the interplay between music and the rough rhythms of life.”
Vogue

“Told with both affection and intensity, Goon Squad stands as a brilliant, all-absorbing novel for the beach, the woods, the air-conditioned apartment or the city stoop while wearing your iPod. Stay with this one.”
—Alan Cheuse, NPR’s All Things Considered

“Brilliant, inventive. . . . Emboldening. It cracks the world open afresh. . . . Would that Marcel Proust could receive [a copy]. It would blow his considerable mind. . . . Expect to inhale Egan’s A Visit From the Goon Squad. Then expect it to lodge in your cranium and your breastbone a good long while.”
Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Frequently dazzling. . . . Egan’s expert flaying of human foibles has the compulsive allure of poking at a sore tooth: excruciating but exhilarating too.”
Entertainment Weekly

“If Egan is our reward for living through the self-conscious gimmicks and ironic claptrap of postmodernism, then it was all worthwhile. . . . [A] triumph of technical bravado and tender sympathy. . . . Turn up the music, skip the college reunion and curl up with The Goon Squad instead.”
The Washington Post

A Visit From the Goon Squad should cement [Egan’s] reputation as one of America’s best, and least predictable, literary novelists.”
—Taylor Antrim, The Daily Beast

“Brilliantly structured. . . . We are pulled right in. . . . [Egan is] a boldly intellectual writer who is not afraid to apply her equally powerful intuitive skills to her ambitious projects.”
Elle

“This is art at its best—as a bulwark against the goon, as it embodies everything at once.”
Austin American Statesman

“An exhilarating, big-hearted, three-headed beast of a story. . . . We see ourselves in all of Egan’s characters because their stories of heartbreak and redemption seem so real they could be our own, regardless of the soundtrack. Such is the stuff great novels are made of.”
Marie-Claire

“For all its postmodern flourishes, Goon Squad is as traditional as a Dickens novel. . . . [Egan’s] aim is not so much to explode traditional storytelling as to explore how it responds to the pressures and opportunities of the digital age.”
Newsweek

“Egan has accomplished the tricky feat of using metafiction techniques without sacrificing old-fashioned story-telling. . . . A Visit from the Goon Squad has a circuitous structure that seems almost designed for our Internet rewired brains.”
The Wall Street Journal

Kurzbeschreibung

Jennifer Egan's spellbinding novel circles the lives of Bennie Salazar, an ageing former punk rocker and record executive, and Sasha, the passionate, troubled young woman he employs. Although Bennie and Sasha never discover each other's pasts, the reader does, in intimate detail, along with the secret lives of a host of other characters whose paths intersect with theirs, over many years, in locales as varied as New York, San Francisco, Naples, and Africa.

We first meet Sasha in her mid-thirties, on her therapist's couch in New York City, confronting her long-standing compulsion to steal. Later, we learn the genesis of her turmoil when we see her as the child of a violent marriage, then a runaway living in Naples, then as a college student trying to avert the suicidal impulses of her best friend. We meet Bennie Salazar at the melancholy nadir of his adult life-divorced, struggling to connect with his nine-year-old son, listening to a washed up band in the basement of a suburban house-and then revisit him in 1979, at the height of his youth, shy and tender, revelling in San Francisco's punk scene as he discovers his ardour for rock and roll and his gift for spotting talent. We learn what became of his high school gang-who thrived and who faltered-and we encounter Lou Kline, Bennie's catastrophically careless mentor, along with the lovers and children left behind in the wake of Lou's far flung sexual conquests and meteoric rise and fall.

A Visit from the Goon Squad is a book about the interplay of time and music, about survival, about the stirrings and transformations set inexorably in motion by even the most passing conjunction of our fates. In a breathtaking array of styles and tones ranging from tragedy to satire to Powerpoint, Egan captures the undertow of self-destruction that we all must either master or succumb to; the basic human hunger for redemption; and the universal tendency to reach for both-and escape the merciless progress of time-in the transporting realms of art and music. Sly, startling, exhilarating work from one of our boldest writers.

Ungewöhnlich, aber gut 18. März 2012
Von _Buchliebhaber_ TOP 1000 REZENSENT

Worum geht es in "A Visit from the Goon Squad"?

Fascinating narration 29. Oktober 2011
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
This is a novel in 13 chapters, each of which forms its own short story. It deals with people in the music industry, most notably a woman called Sasha and her boss Benny Salazar. It spans a period of some 40 to 50 years, from the 1970s to the 2020s or 2030s - so, obviously, some of it is set in the future.

As I began reading, I grew fond of the character the first chapter centers on, Sasha, who works in the music industry and is struggling with her kleptomania. Going on reading, I found that none of the other chapters took up her perspective again.

I find this a difficult thing to deal with when I am reading a novel: I hate getting to know a character, beginning to feel for them and their conflicts, and then see them completely abandoned in later chapters. So, some pages into chapter 3 or 4, I found myself getting impatient, even angry at the author. I decided to give the book the benefit of the doubt (after all, it's a Pulitzer Prize winner!) and continued.

And I found myself rewarded. This book gets better with every chapter. While each of them tells the story from a different point of view, they all blend together and tell a fascinating story about people and their lives. We begin to learn more about Sasha - her adolescence, her experiences as a lost young woman, her way towards a little more happiness... We also learn more about the other characters and get to see what happens to them, where they came from etc.

The novel grew thus more and more fascinating the more I kept reading. Egan even dares to tell one of the chapters as a "slideshow diary" and it works.

Time and its passing are an important topic - the novel's title is somewhat illuminated by the statement of one of the characters that "time is a goon" as well as the characters personal development over these years, their loss of youth, their way to - if not happiness - a feeling of contentment.

If you like an experimental narrative structure and if you enjoy to follow characters' development over time, this will be a rewarding read.

I have to admit, neither the title of this novel nor the product description initially sounded very appealing to me, and I bought the book mainly to find out why it had made the New York Times bestseller lists and won a Pulitzer Prize. I was not disappointed. What really makes this book special and fascinating is not so much the story itself, but the unique style in which it is written. Each chapter is narrated by a different character from their own perspective and is only loosely tied to the preceding and following chapters. The challenge for the reader is to figure out how these almost independent units link together, since the overlap in characters is often small and there is not always continuity in space and time. Overall, however, the units fit together cleverly to yield a detailed portrait of a group of people connected to the rock and roll music industry in New York and California, focusing on their everyday lives, their problems, their hopes and dreams. Reading this novel requires a certain amount of thought and attention to detail (especially to characters that seem minor at the time), but it is very rewarding and beautiful in the end.

I felt no shame whatsoever in these activities, because I understood what almost no one else seemed to grasp: that there was only an infinitesimal difference, a difference so small that it barely existed except as a figment of the human imagination, between working in a tall green glass building on Park Avenue and collecting litter in a park. In fact, there may have been no difference at all. "e;
