Don't miss your CALLING as a parent.

You've read the statistics. You've probably even heard pastors, leaders, and other parents talk about how we are losing this generation for Christ after they leave for college. The reality is, most kids are lost before they even reach college.
Rob Rienow calls us to some forgotten ways in the Western church today. As a youth pastor that is deep in all of the youth ministry ideas, I can't seem to shake what Rob proposes in Visionary Parenting. Parents are called to be the primary spiritual caregivers and infuencers in the lives of their kids. I've encountered so many parents in ministry that are physically 'there' for their kids, but that simply 'check out' spiritually with their kids. They then basically delegate to the Church to do what God has already called them to be in the lives of their families. Rob Rienow calls parents back to their most fundamental calling as a parent: to pass on the legacy of the faith to their kids and to be intentional about practicing discipleship in the home. As a youth pastor, I am thrilled about this incredible vision that Rob casts for parents.
As a man moving into marriage, I'm even more excited about the vision for practicing discipleship in the home than I am about other parents' practicing it! I don't see the idea of visionary parenting to be a burden, but a wonderful gift and journey that God calls my future wife and I towards. I'm excited to build this vision into my marriage even before we have kids.

Great Resource for Parents and Ministry Leaders

This book outlines the principles layed out in the Visionary Parenting DVD series. The concept of Visionary Parenting is simple. It's time for parents to return to their role as spiritual leaders of their children, but we've lost that in modern culture. So, how do we do it? Visionary Parenting lays out what it takes to be a "visionary parent," one who takes an active role in passing on the faith to their children as part of an intentional plan of multigenerational faithfulness. This is not just another "how to" parenting class. This is a reminder to the Christian parent that they have the awesome and wonderful task of bringing up their children to know and love the Lord.
In addition to being an indespensible tool for parents, it is also a great resource for ministry leaders to help families in their congregations catch the vision for God-centered homes. The church has become the epicenter of all things spiritual. It's time the church helped shift parents from "outsourcing" their role to the Sunday School, to becoming partners in raising up families of faith. Churches will multiply their effectiveness by partnering with parents to build the next generation of Christians rather than losing them to the world.
I cannot fully describe how this has impacted my own family. We went from letting the world overtake our calendar and pouring all our energy into working at Sunday School at church and having nothing left over for our own kids, to creating intentional time with our children and changing the leadership roles in the household to let Dad take his proper place as spiritual leader.
We have run the Visionary Parenting DVD series at our church and have been overjoyed to see a real change in the parents who participated.
Simple truth, amazing results!

This book and his DVD of the same name are critical resources to all ministers of the faith. Everyone, from the senior pastor to the high school nursery volunteer needs to be grounded in the basics of how faith is passed down from generation to generation. This is THE tool. There is a growing movement to try to close the back doors of our churches through which members are leaving as fast or faster than we can replace them. What about the back door to our own homes? Plow early and deep at home. Catch the Vision. Get this book.
