Vintage Cookie Recipes contains thirty recipes for mostly well-known cookies that have stood the test of time and are as popular today as they were forty or fifty years ago. I think I've baked all of these over the years, but some bring back special memories.

The first time I heard of Bourbon Balls was probably about the time they were invented in the Fifties. We were going south to spend Christmas with my mother's family in a "dry county" in North Carolina. Leftover from Prohibition days, no alcohol could be sold in dry counties - or "imported" for that matter. (Moonshine was quite popular!) Knowing that my uncle quite liked a bit of bourbon now and again, my mother made a batch of Bourbon Balls to take along. About the time that can was being passed, my tee-totaler Grandma, not realizing there was bourbon in them, decided to try one . . and then another . . . and then a third. That was the only time in anyone's living memory Grandma had one too many, a topic that came up every Christmas baking season as Mom made those Bourbon Balls again.

There are other goodies in here too. Congo Bars are lovely as are the Forgotten Cookies. The recipes are well laid out and the book does contain an interactive Table of Contents accessible from the Kindle Navigation Menu.

You're sure to find some favorites in this one. Recommended.

I have many cookbooks but none have recipes like this one. If you have a yen for something comforting, there's nothing like a homemade cookie, better yet, a cookie that tastes like something your mother would have made. This compilation is a treat in itself and if like me, fudge is your thing you will adore the fudge scotch squares - only downside is that they are made in moments with minimal effort - this is not good... This book is a keeper, thank you!

I like the fact that the title says flat-out that these are vintage recipes. No claims about these being the most unique, mind-blowing, quickest and easiest recipes EVAR OMG!!11!!ELEVENTY-ONE! (*cough* Sorry about that.)

The recipes are clear, very easy to read, and appear to be complete. The instructions are compatible with my baking experience and I wouldn't hesitate to try any of them. The Mud Hens, in particular, sound really interesting.

Some of them are classics that I have seen variations of multiple times, and some are new to me. Each recipe is on its own page (read on Kindle PC) and the formatting appears to be clean and consistent. The last instruction on the bourbon cookies made me laugh out loud (and wonder what the story is behind it).

I am not entirely sure how "vintage" I would consider a recipe using cake mix, but honestly - it's been around long enough that "Grandma" could well have used it. Several of the recipes do, in fact, fit well with my association of that word, so I'm not going to worry about it.

Why doesn't it get 5 stars? Mainly because it doesn't have that unique, personalized touch. I don't know anything about the author or why she selected these particular recipes, if she made them or if her grandmother did. That's my standard for a 5-star cookbook review - good recipes, clear instructions, few errors, and a bit of personalization, something to make it stand out a bit.
