I bought this book on a whim, and what a trip it took me on. I've read a lot in my life, but this book is unlike any other I've read, so it's a bit hard to characterize.
Flusser analyzes how our our posistion in the phylogentic tree fundamentally controls our philosophy, art, language and culture. That's maybe not so orginal. But the counter example to our culture is that of the vampire squid, who lives in eternal darkness 3,000 ft. below sea level. And the book is first and foremost about the squid world.
The first half details the curious facts of the squid's existence: behavior, biology, mating behavior, etc. But then the fun starts when building on that biological understanding, Flusser begins to explicate the art, culture and philosophy of these sentient beings. And who could imagine that the squid even has a culture or philosophy? Or art? Or love? Don't have to go to space to encounter aliens, they are just a few miles away. And what could we possibly have in common with these bizarre animals?
You need to get through the rather detailed description of squid life before you get onto the philosophical musings. I found the book totally delightful. 120 pages. Brazilian means a translation of the Brazilian version. He also wrote a version in German...enjoy!
