Pressestimmen

"An exhibition on Viking culture on this scale hasn't been seen for several deacdes, but it will be worth the wait, thanks to a wealth of new finds. The show enables visitors to look beyond the almost cartoon image of the Vikings that has been prevalent since the nineteenth century. Although the Roskilde ship was launched a thousand years ago, the culture that created it still lives inside our own. There won't be any flaming torches or burning ships at the British Museum but the presence of the Vikings, their culture, their beliefs, their warrior ways, will be brought to life." Financial Times preview of the exhibition on which the book is based"

The color photos provide a wonderfully close look at Viking artifacts but also move this exhibit catalog beyond the museum, with lush depictions of countrysides, archival photos of archaeological digs, and art from the era. Enthusiasts and amateurs alike will engage with this modern and cross-cultural take on the Viking age." Emily Weak, Booklist (July 1, 2014)"

"[The] book and the exhibition are visually stunning. . . . [and] the section on 'Belief and Ritual' is fascinating." Tom Shippey, London Review of Books (April 3, 2014)"

"(Starred Review) A beautiful, accessible book, with strong interpretive narration that will be enjoyed by Viking enthusiasts, medievalists, artists interested in material culture, and newcomers to the subject." Evan M. Anderson, Library Journal (April 2014)"

." . . [T]he fourth chapter of the exhibition catalog, Vikings: Life and Legend, is helpful. Separate essays by Neil Price, Peter Pentz, Lars Jorgensen, and Jan Bill fit together the ideal world of dragons, gods, the afterlife, and magic with the holy sites, vestiges of propitation and ritual, and all the other finds, some of them on display in the exhibition. The book is not a guide to the exhibition but a sort of contrapuntal statement of how thinks look at present in this field of investigation. In chapter three there are sections by Matthias Wemhoff and Anne Pedersen describing the opulent halls and amenities of the chiefs and rulers who eventually led or drove their dependents to the momentous bath of baptism." Eric Christiansen, The New York Review of Books (September 25, 2014)"

"This volume was written to accompany an exhibition organized by the national museums of Britain, Denmark, and Germany. . . . Contributor Neil Price does an excellent job interpreting belief and ritual for a subject always difficultto treat objectively. The writing is high quality as are the copious illustrations and publication standards. Filled with the latest scholarship, this book would be a valuable acquisition for college and university libraries. Useful bibliography and index. Summing Up Highly Recommended. All academic levels/libraries." D. J. Shepherd, CHOICE(November 2014)"

"A rich and engaging work that offers insights about the worlds of the Viking Age, for both scholars and general readers, Vikings is a joy and a surprise to read. . . . Williams, Pentz and Wemhoff (as well as their museum staffs and other authors in text) are to be congratulated for putting together such a gorgeous and substantive work about the age of the Vikings. I am already imagining ways to use it in my World and Western history survey courses." Thomas J. Rushford, Itinerario"

"Much more than simply a lavish catalog to accompany the exhibition of the same name organized by the National Museum of Denmark, the British Museum, and the Museum fur Vor- und Fruhgeschichte, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin... this attractive, well-produced volume addresses a comprehensive array of subjects relevant to understanding the material and thought worlds of the Viking Age in northern Europe (roughly AD 750-1150)." Stephen Mitchell, Speculum (October 2015)"

HASH(0x9dd8063c) von 5 Sternen You get rather sumptuous high quality pictorials 9. März 2014
Von Sussman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This is a great accompaniment to the exhibition at The British Museum; there is plenty of detailed information. You also get rather sumptuous high quality pictorials showing some amazing items from the Viking age. This not just not guide book, it also stand alone tome that gives over a wealth of information in its own right. That said this book does add additional level information while you are visiting the exhibition. This is a very good title that is highly recommended.

HASH(0x9dd8078c) von 5 Sternen Vikingdom on Show 16. März 2014
Von Dag Stomberg - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is a result of the Vikings: life and legend at the British Museum in 2014. The exhibition
encompasses by means of a study of the Vikings in a context of interactions with other peoples
and cultures around the three centuries in question.

A coherent civilisation is examined with a well thought-out and easy to ponder travelogue.

Greatly recommended!

HASH(0x9dd80ab0) von 5 Sternen A highly drool-worthy visual survey 7. Juni 2014
Von Michael K. Smith - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This very lavishly illustrated large-format volume was published for the international public exhibition of the same name put together by the British Museum, the National Museum of Denmark, and the Berlin State Museum. It was the first such exhibition in more than three decades, which gave the organizers the opportunity to show off a great many recent finds from many parts of Europe and the Near East (the Vikings got around) and to propose various refinements in interpretation. The centerpiece was "Roskild 6," the longest Norse warship yet excavated (though not that much of it actually survived above the keel), which was mounted in such a way that it could be broken down and easily moved to the next venue.

Because it's a companion to a visual event, the natural emphasis is on material culture, though the objects on display, which includes a great many weapons and a great deal of jewelry of one kind and another, is often used to exemplify Scandinavian religion, social structure, politics, and the warrior ethos. Also, because of the intended audience for the exhibition, the book doesn't try to move beyond a broad survey of the period 850-1050, though the geographical reach is considerable. There are five broad sections (each by a different specialist), on trade and cultural contact, warfare and military expansion, political power and the aristocracy, beliefs and ritual, and the ships that were essential in making the Vikings what they were.

The photography is of very high quality, though, so even the student of the period, who is unlikely to learn much that's new, will nevertheless drool over the large-format pictures, all of them in color. And they do provide an extensive bibliography.

HASH(0x9dd80f84) von 5 Sternen Viking Era History brought to life visually AND intellectually! 13. Mai 2015
Von Maui Mike - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I discovered this wonderful book in my dentist's office. After reading several passages, I decided I needed to own my own copy, something I rarely do in this age of e-books. The history and archeology of what's loosely known as the Viking "culture" has fascinated me for years. What makes this treatment of the two subjects unique is the authors' use of in-detail descriptions (coupled with numerous photos and illustrations) of period-specific artifacts to construct a more complete story of that civilization. This book will interest not just history buffs and archeologists, but also those involved in the visual arts such as sculptors, metal smiths, graphic designers, and jewelers. The Viking era has its own uniquely attractive cache, and this book does a wonderful job of aggregating all its disparate parts and depicting it visually as well as intellectually.
