The very quiet cricket tells a harrowing, tragic love story of a young cricket named Cecil. The story starts with the murder of his father, king Cecil. To add incest to injury, his uncle then takes over the crown and marries his mother. King Cecil's ghost appears to Cecil and tells him of his brother's foul deed. Throughout the rest of the story Cecil spirals downwards as he agonises over whether to avenge his father's death. The story is very cleverly written by the master of all things tragic, Eric Carle. Although not as thought provoking as his world war II epic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket still raises interesting issues about race, poverty, and the ethics of modern corporate life.
