Marred by a dire soprano,

Two hundred young musicians from 28 nations working on Verdi's Requiem is a notable event testifying that race is no barrier to the enjoyment of the universal language of music. Despite what many think of him as a conductor, Domingo does a great job directing the enthusiastic Youth Orchestra of the Americas and the no less passionate EuropaChorAkademie (conducting the piece in just under 80 minutes, he adopts well-judged tempi). I'm impressed by Fredrika Brillembourg (a velvety mezzo in the Christa Ludwig manner but without possessing her predecessor's notable long breath), Marco Berti (less wobbly than usual) and Ildar Abdrazakov (a slightly dry but commanding Siepi-like bass). Regrettably, the whole team is seriously let down by Cristina Gallardo-Domas: in addition to an unbearable vibrato, she fails to sustain even the shortest of phrases (the breathing breaks within them are embarrassingly unprecedented; she looks as if about to explode during the famous long phrase 'Sed signifer sanctus Michael' and almost chokes on another passage soon afterwards); under pressure, she gets worse as the evening proceeds (just imagine what happens by the time she reaches 'Libera me'). Not being familiar with Cristina's work, I think she isn't only miscast here but also overrated (I've checked clips from some recordings - what a ghoulish idea to have cast her as Maria/Amelia Boccanegra with Hampson! - and I still keep wondering what her fans admire about her). This could have been a moving performance without Cristina.
