5.0 von 5 Sternen Stunning 8. Oktober 2013
Von designday - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
I recently purchased "VERANDA The Art of Outdoor Living" and cannot put it down. It is absolutely beautiful! I wish I could say I have a favorite outdoor space, but they are all truly stunning. It has given me exciting new ideas for several projects I am working on. I was surprised to see a couple of the other reviews that didn't feel the book showcased actual outdoor living spaces. The book is filled with them and I was invited into each space, wishing I was there with a cup of tea and book in hand. Now I want to redo my own outdoor space, again! And contrary to what one reviewer said, all the outdoor spaces and gardens are completely different and unique. Perhaps one needs to be in the design field to recognize that every outdoor space has it's own parameters and will always have it's own character. I will be giving this book to my clients for Christmas and I am certain they will enjoy it as much as I do.

3.0 von 5 Sternen The Expense of (This) Outdoor Living 24. Februar 2014
Von S. L. Smith - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
Veranda The Art of Outdoor Living features opulent landscapes and verdant settings. The lush photographs trump the sparse text. There is no “how to” or “where to buy” if a homeowner wants to achieve the designer looks. For the average gardener, it’s more of a dream book. For an estate owner, it’s only a loose guide for their requisite landscape architect and groundskeepers.

The book is presented in four sections: Classic, Modern, Romantic, and Exotic. Each section features palatial homes on sweeping grounds. Perspective and layering are exemplified extremely well. Some of the selected sites capture “outdoor living” better than others, with sitting areas and entertaining spaces. Other sites invite walking tours and veritable exploration parties.

It’s a lovely book, but its purpose seems to be just to appear lovely. This is almost an embarrassment of richness - a rare case where more plentiful and detailed text (specific plant varieties, growing zones, sources) would have brought the expensive expanses down to earth.

5.0 von 5 Sternen DREAMY!! 8. Oktober 2013
Von Ruby - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Lisa Newsom strikes gold again! This GORGEOUS garden book has just the right mix of European villas, modern and classic American exteriors and exotic escapes from around the world. Monet's garden at Giverny, Marie Antoinette's Bagatelle, and France's favorite private garden, Le Jardin de Brécy are just a few stand-outs. There are quite a few designers' own spaces such as the Northern California haven of Paul Wiseman, Kathryn Ireland's country farmhouse in Southwest France, Charlotte Moss' East Hampton escape, Juan Montoya's woodland retreat in upstate New York and Carolyne Roehm's exquisite Georgian estate, Weatherstone. My favorite section is the Exotic. The Mexican hillside oasis by Logoretta + Logoretta is BREATHTAKING as are Las Catalinas in Costa Rica and Island Idyll in the Dominican Republic by Italian architect Duccio Ermenegildo. Hutton Wilkinson's Bel-Air compound, Dawnridge, once owned by Tony Duquette is pure fantasy. This book has it all...a truly inspiring and monumental work. Bravo Lisa!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Landscapes for Dreaming 23. Januar 2014
Von James Ellsworth - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
International in scope, this lushly photographed coffee table-sized book takes readers to Provence, Mexico, Belgium, the Caribbean, California, the American South and so on for a look at the result of high-end, high-design gardens. Examples have been chosen that show what can be done with different types of sites and in different climates. In every example, some attention is given to the way in which the architecture of the property meets and fits into the planted space. Nor is just one style of gardening represented. The book is divided into sections: Classic, Modern, Romantic and Exotic. The reasons for this typology are well-illustrated and become understandable as one reads along. Of particular interest to the general reader is a very fine article on Monet's garden at Giverny: it is shown in wonderful bloom and shows more than the lily pond and arched bridge. The 'Exotic' section shows some fine and striking examples of the type that feature vivid use of colors, furniture, plant forms and even garden sculpture.

This is not much of a book for hands-on gardeners; it is more a garden tour of 'lifestyles of the rich and famous.' Key ingredients among the plantings are identified and those who can afford it are pointed in the direction of some major contemporary garden designers and landscape architects. Drawn from the pages of 'Veranda' magazine, the text runs more along the lines of 'Muffy and Jamison Muchmoney love to spend time away from the world of high finance in this lovely setting, where they often have 100 of their closest friends over for an al fresco luncheon...' In other words, little time is spent telling the reader 'how they did it' or how you can too.

Still, this makes a wonderful and colorful book to peruse on dark and dreary days. Owners of smaller sites and of smaller budgets can get some useful ideas to apply on a less lavish scale, seeing the effects of creating a garden room or a certain combination of mass plantings, trees and shrubs. It is the sort of book guests will gravitate to and pick up and turn the pages of, dreaming about what they see.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Delightful collection of inspiring outdoor landscapes 7. Februar 2014
Von Esther Schindler - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
Although I'm a fool for architecture books, somehow I've never picked up a copy of Veranda magazine. As its name implies, it's about outdoor rooms, courtyards, gardens, and other elements of home on the OUTSIDE of the four walls. This book collects quite a few photo essays from the magazine, along with some explanatory commentary. And it's truly pretty.

The homes and gardens shown are from all over the world, from Provence to Bermuda to southern California to Long Island. They range from modern gardens to traditional landscapes, with pools and ocean views. Each home gets a page of context (where it is, what the home owners care about, and name-dropping of the landscape designer) and then three or four pages of photos that are, in my opinion, worth paging through just for the "Gosh, honey, isn't this cool-looking?" value.

It's very much meant for upper-crust landscaping, NOT for most of us who are trying to figure out what to do with that ugly corner of our yards. But then, I wasn't looking for that. If you are... keep looking.

I don't expect it to be particularly useful for my southwest backyard. But I'm happy with the book just for the pretty photography. I think you will be, too.
