Synopsis
To many people, Venice is quite simply the most beautiful city in the world. At first sight it appears like a dream - its breathtaking architecture and almost overwhelming weight of centuries. It is a city of many contradictions - something grand but faded, magical yet ghostly, beautiful but with a dark, sinister undercurrent running through its canals, and a pervasive sense that a second spectral city exists beneath the facade of everything you see. In this book, photographer Simon Marsden invites you to step away from the plastic souvenirs and the gaudy masks of the carnevale and enter this ghostly world. He reveals the "Bridge of Sighs" as it must have seemed to the friends of prisoners who were marched along it to their death, "The Island of the Dead" with its barred and locked door set low on the water-line, the peeling walls of a once proud palazzo, the mossy steps of a canal-side residence, a gilded funeral gondola, a solitary cloaked figure walking home from carnival and St Mark's Square in winter shrouded in white as an icy mist sweeps in from the sea.

Simon Marsden's books are such a niche category that only someone with incredibly low understanding would confuse it with a Gap coffee table book. The two low reviews here are because they fell short of doing their homework before making a purchase. Marsden continues publishing books has a dedicated fan base and its obvious that these low reviewers don't know what they're talking about.
They can use something else to stack over Cosmo.

This is a strange book, but not in the haunting way the photographer intended. While it's not possible to take a bad picture in this gorgeous city, this is a weak effort from an artist I really love who has missed the point of Venice. If you know the city this book is at least interesting - if not, I recommend a collection of the paintings of Caneletto.

Don't waste your money on this book if you love beautiful photos of the most exotic city on the planet. The photos are fuzzy due to the photographer's attempt to evoke spookiness. Ugh. I never thought someone could make Venice look bad, but this guy has managed to. So disappointing. I mean, it's a photo book, and the photos suck.
I have never understood the city's reputation as spooky, haunting and morbid- I find it to be the most bustling, vivacious, colorful of places. I guess it's just humanity's innate hydrophobia.
