Zoey Sampson is not only an active vegan, she is also an accomplished cook and a devoted exercise addict. To borrow a phrase form the Major General's son in Gilbert and Sullivans' `The Pirates of Penzance', Zoey could sing `I am the Very Model of a Modern Vegan-General'. But out of her concern for finding recipes books that give ample selections of vegan foods she has published this (revised) book of the Vegan Athlete Cookbook. `The key to my power packed diet is variety. Fruits, vegetables, plenty of leafy greens, whole grain products, nuts, seeds, and legumes are only a part of what gives me my incredible energy.'

After a short but pointed discussion about the protein/vegan controversy that seems to gain noise in the bodybuilder's arena, she explains that her recipes, without the animal source proteins, offer a scientifically sound analysis of the nutritional content, including a carbohydrate, protein and fat count per serving listed for every recipe.

Overall, the author has done a nice job compiling an assortment of vegan recipes.

Many individuals who do not eat meat, may not be aware of how important the following is to their healthy diet. To neutralize “phytic acid” and other anti-nutrients, and for best absorption of nutrients, whole grains and nuts should be prepared by soaking, sprouting or sour leavening. Generally speaking, whole grains and nuts have high levels of “phytic acid”, a substance that reduces our absorption of minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium. In my opinion, the author should include this step as a section in the book.

Lastly, many recipes may be converted to healthier sources of nutrition by substituting with organic ingredients/ organic produce. Some pesticide-free / organic produce may be available at the local farmers market.

I found the recipes in this book to be ridiculously simple, in a bad way. Most of the recipes, the average vegan/vegetarian probably already has in their cooking repertoire. Additionally, there is not one photo in the book. To me, that is a kids of death for a cook book.

On the positive, if you are blew to this type of cooking, the recipes are quick and easy, and they don't require any unusual ingredients like many vegan recipes.

I got this book, in exchange for a review. I'm not vegan, nor am I an athlete but it looked interesting. The recipes look well written,easy to follow and tasty but there are NO PHOTOS. I like to see a picture of what I am cooking. I was going to try some of the recipes but then saw an interesting cookery book at my local supermarket and I'm working through that instead.

In her preface, Zoey tells us how she went vegan to avoid animal cruelty and was pleasantly surprised at the lack of any downside: she felt fabulous and her training remained right in track despite having given up meat and dairy. It was a simple matter of finding non-animal sources for all of the nutrients she was accustomed to eating. As one would expect from an athlete, her recipes tend to high calorie, nor does she go into how to balance your nutrients for whichever mode of training you're into — her assumption is that you picked up her book looking for tasty vegan alternatives to the sorts of recipes common to your athletic's literature.

Zoey's recipes tend to be simple and classic. It doesn't have to be fancy to be good! Each comes with an ingredient list, simple directions and a per serving nutritional breakdown. Pulling it all together into appealing meals for your regimen is up to you — Zoey's merely showing us that it doesn't have to contain animal products to be both healthy and yummy. Several of Amazon's reviewers remarked on the lack of hand-holding for rank beginners to vegan cookery, while a few were dismayed at the lack of photographs. Neither really belongs in this book in my opinion, but a short section toward the beginning pointing to good sources for the basics would be helpful.
