Forget those one-color chenille bedspreads; here is a new multilayered, multicolored technique to produce a variety of vests, jackets, pillows, and wall-hangings. Known as "slashing," the process involves sewing five layers of fabric together and then cutting through to the bottom (foundation) layer. Tips for color combinations and layering and combining different fabrics (i.e., silks, linens, and cottons, but rarely polyesters), as well as patterns, finishing tips, and diagrams, are included. Washing the produce forces edges to fluff up and fray. This effect is called "blooming," or, as Holmberg names it, faux chenille. Anyone observing the results will call them gorgeous and innovative. Slashing is the process of layering cotton fabrics, machine stitching through the layers, cutting some of the layers, and washing the piece until the desired amount of fraying occurs. Inspired by this technique, Homberg has developed the process of creating faux chenille. Here she details both her successes and failures, strongly recommending the creation of a sample block before committing to a project as the combination of unrelated colors and textures will greatly affects the results. Homberg offers directions for creating unique wearable art and wall hangings, along with the basic steps of layering, stitching, and laundering. Beginner techniques with expert adventurous artistic results; a nice addition to most collections.?JYL

If you love to sew with creativity and gorgeous color, this is the book to buy! Combine six different fabrics, some outrageous even horrid and come out with a winner. Finishing details could be a little more precise or perhaps include a line drawing of where/how to put the binding on. The mystery is that you can't be sure exactly how the finished product will look unless you make a sample swatch first. Get ready for the compliments.

Had me use all my "stashed" fabrics

All the fabrics that had lost it's appeal and lay in the bottom of the drawer were now brought out and "chenilled" Great fun and surprising the wonderful results. Would have liked more directions on how to "contruct" with the finished product. Other directions clear and straight forward.

I've taken classes from Nannette and loved her books. This book has several ideas in mixing and layering fabric. She has a couple of close-ups on different closures for jackets and vests. She has three patterns in the book: Lattice Work vest, Lattice Work jacket, and The Captain in Chenille jacket. The pattern's are 1" square enlargements, and easy to work with. They are perfect patterns for Faux Chenille.
