Having read several of Ms. Picoults books I can't help but feeling that with her it's hit-or-miss. Some of her books - such as "Nineteen Minutes", "Plain Truth" or "The Pact" - are fantastic, while others are not. "Vanishing Acts" is one those books that are not that good.
I can't even say what bothered me about this book --- I just couldn't bring myself to care about these characters or what happened to them, and the story couldn't hold my interest. It is one of those rare books that I didn't finish.
So, if you want to read a great book by this author try one of the ones I mentioned above ... but steer clear of "Vanishing Acts" or "Change of Heart".
I can't even say what bothered me about this book --- I just couldn't bring myself to care about these characters or what happened to them, and the story couldn't hold my interest. It is one of those rare books that I didn't finish.

Jodi Picould gives a fairly good description of the dilema of finding out your beloved Parent has abducted you. With Delias father Andrew Picoult created a fantastic character, who gives a very good look at the brutality in the overcrouded jails. Apart from him, Delia and her indian friend, the characters fade into the story. Vanishing Acts is a good book, but not Picoults best.

to the story: delia hopkins lives an ordinary life in a smalltown in new hampshire. engaged to eric, an alcoholic with whom she has a little daughter, delia lives in a house with her beloved father, andrew. she made a job about her feeling of being lost and finds missing people. until the day when fitz, her best friend, finds an interesting story about delia... andrew gets arrestes for kindnapping delia 28 years before. delia's world trumbels and falls apart. she doesn't know her dad any longer, can't trust nobody but also learns to know more about her mother, who she thought was dead for the 3 decades.
delia's trip to arizona, the place where she was raised until her 4th birthday, becomes an exploration of love, identity and trust. she discovers that truth isn't always what it seems and that sometimes the reality hurts more than the dreams we had about them...
a great book for all who seek the truth but never had the heart to find it!
