The book is chock-a-block with magic lore and with details of the craft of illusion, which provide a fine complement to the engrossing forensic-science puzzles.
The characters, as usual with Deaver, are little more than cardboard cutouts. Even Rhyme himself, a brilliant quadriplegic and former head of NYPD forensics, seems more a collection of characteristics than a man. But Deaver's cutouts are sturdy and well-constructed, and the book's plotting and pacing--featuring twist upon twist and reversal upon reversal--are nothing short of dazzling, reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best. Deaver proves himself an accomplished illusionist, misdirecting your attention with one hand while slipping a firecracker down your pants with the other. --Nicholas H. Deaver has always written great psychological thrillers, but lately the plots seemed to be a bit too far-fetched and Lincoln Rhymes'genius as a quadriplegic criminalist a bit grandiose. What a wonderful surprise his latest novel is! Lincoln and Amelia seem to have found their match in evil magician ( or illusionist ) Erick Weir who teaches them that things are not necessarily what they appear to be. THE VANISHED MAN is really full of unexpected twists and turns. It's beautifully written and delivers interesting insights into the world of magic.

I've read all of his books and could not wait for the new one to come out.
It's good, it's really good, but it has some lengthy parts which get a bit
boring and I had a feeling he was searching for ways to continue the plot.
There is unbelievable magic tricks in this book, the twist and turns take
your breath away. Rhyme is at his best as usual. But still, I cannot give
this book all 5 stars. It sounds a bit off in parts and far fetched. But still,
you have to read it if you're a Deaver fan and you'll forgive him for the
not so good parts.

Ein Buch der Meisterklasse, spannend bis zur letzten Seite. Die Identität des Täters völlig unklar, die Helferin der Polizei scheint ein doppeltes Spiel zu treiben - oder doch nicht? Und selbst als man sich in vielen Punkten sicher ist muss man feststellen, dass rein gar nichts so ist wie es scheint.
