Reader Reviews for Using OS X Lion Server in the Home

Thanks for doing this series -- very timely for me as I am just getting ready to download Lion Server and do a similar setup myself. I was searching to see how people used a Lion server for their home networks and to look for any guidance, so glad I found this series.

Just discovered this article series today. I've read a couple of the sections and it looks good.

I must say it hit me as like a breath of fresh air to me the moment I saw the Mac headline on WGS, a site that I associate with Windows, and Home Server. And after what happened and the lack of any positive news our of the field for a while, I have no doubt this Mac Server series is going to be very interesting.

This series is an excellent resource.

This is great so far - thanks! I am not an IT pro, but the family has all their photos, music, video etc fragmented on individual macs, all laptops, (and 1 PC). I am seriously considering buying a mini server to consolidate and share these files. I cant wait to read the upcoming segments! Thanks again.

Great article! Keep up the good work...I can't wait for the next part of the series. I'm thinking of ditching WHS and WMC all together and building a hackintosh lion server and a hackintosh plex media center.

I have to admit, this is a great article! I have a friend/client wanting to network his house and he's a ALL MAC household and cringed when I said windows server, so if this works out, I'm on it! I am in the process of installing this on my hackintosh.

Just a question, but when will the next part be coming out? I am very excited - I love the series and I am seriously considering a mac mini server. Just wanted to see how to configure it.

Great series of articles ! Thank you.

Great articles. Looking forward for the rest of it.

I am very new to home networking and have found these articles of great help.

August 2013

Nice and direct guide for Lion server in a home environment. Bear in mind that this refers to Lion server, so not the latest version, but with few exceptions the differences are rather small.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Might be just what you need. Might not. 4. April 2012
Von Walt P - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Apple has priced Lion Server so that a lot of people who would never have tried using server software will be giving it a try. Server software is complicated stuff and Apple's online documentation isn't very helpful.

Terry Walsh kept a diary of what he did to get his server up and running. If he ran into a snag, he figured out what to do and included that in the diary. It's comforting to know that the series of steps in this book worked for him and probably will for anyone. It may be exactly what you are looking for.

The downside is that you'll end up with a server that runs just like his. There's no discussion of alternatives that may be more useful for what you may want to do. There's also no discussion of concepts that might help you decide if you want to do something other than what he did.

I first looked at the portions of the book posted on the wegotserved website. I bought the book because I was curious about the things that were not online but reserved for the paid copy of the book. Frankly, I expected more than what I got.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Must Have Book if Converting from WHS 9. März 2012
Von Land_Master - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Mr. Walsh has been a Windows Home Server (WHS) authority since the original HP Mediasmart servers came on the market. Unfortunately WHS is currently in a demise and Terry being one of the Home Server "Pioneer's" decided to attempt replacing the functionality of those devices with a more "Long Term" Apple solution. He has done so admirably and the results of his many hours of trials and tribulations has resulted in this book.

This book is a must have if you want to do things right as unfortunately OS X Lion Server is fraught with Bug's and / or difficult configuration steps. In my experience one wrong move caused me to start from scratch and I did this more than once. While the book was initially compiled using the first release of the Software, the steps taken are proven to circumvent any issues making it next to foolproof for the later versions which may or may not have addressed all of the early issues.

You do NOT have to be any type of a guru to perform these steps as the screen captures and detailed verbiage that is provided make this a book for "dummies". Expert users can also benefit from it as advanced concepts are discussed.

The bottom line is a suitable and in many cases more robust Apple solution does in fact exist for a majority of the WHS components and this book will show you how to implement them.

This is a highly detailed configuration guide and well worth the money if you value your time. Highly recommended!!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Clear Cut and Dry. It Will have you up and running in no time 2. August 2012

I stumbled upon Terry's book samples when I was trying to decide what to replace my old server with and it helped me make my decision. I didn't realize I could buy it from Amazon though (or I would have instead of from the iBook Store).

This book is Clear and straight-forward. It covers everything a person needs to know to get their Home Server up and running. It gently walks the reader through the process and includes a section on iOS devices and management without being too wordy.

If you're looking for something simple, easy and quick to read, and written like a set of directions, this is the perfect book for you.

This book was written for the home user that wants to run a file server and manage devices and it is a great reference tool for the tech-savvy. The only thing this book didn't cover was how to use the mac as a media server. I've still yet to figure out how I can serve media without having to stay logged into an account.

Beginner with MAC OS

I had my server up and running under an hour and connected my Macbook pro and windows laptops....
1. Setup network Accounts
2. Setup Fileserver with permissions at folder level.
3. Connected my MACBOOK Pro and Windows 7 laptops to the fileserver.

Better than MAC OS Lion Server for dummies....

This is my bible ...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Instructions for Windows and Mac Users Alike! 9. Februar 2012
Von TechGeek - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
As an IT professional, I have been using PCs and Windows for many, many years. I've never seriously considered Macs until recently. I have iPhones and iPads at my house and my whole family and I love the simplicity of them, but I never considered applying that simplicity to my home server environment.

As an interesting turn of events, I switched jobs and my new company is historically a Windows company, but is rapidly introducing Macs instead, citing "they just work!". I've been intrigued, then I saw Terry's book. A Windows guy writing a "how to" guide for replacing Windows with Macs... seemed too good to be true!

I bought the book, read it in one afternoon on an airplane and will be shortly converting my entire environment off of Windows to Macs.

I've followed Terry's website to get my Windows Home Server environment up and running successfully and his advice has always been "spot on". This eBook is no exception. It offers clear instructions, screen shots to emphasize his points, and discussions about why (or why not) to implement certain features.

As an added bonus, I had a few questions after reading the book, so I posted to Terry's website and he responded very quickly!

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in implementing Macs in their home network. Whether you have all Macs, all PCs or some combination of both, this book will give you plenty of interesting options to consider!
