It's books like this that will eventually cause a giant backlash in race relations. People like Kivel are driving a wedge between whites with honest pride in who they are and whites with ridiculous guilt complexes. Whites should be responsible for themselves just like every other race is. Why should it be proposed that whites give up their identity to promote another? Kivel transfers the "white man's burden" to the new millenium with PC lingo. Not a good idea.

The book is helpful. It does not imply that white people are the problem. It just acknowledges that the ways in which white people can work for racial justice are different from the ways in which people of other races can. A white person, for instance cannot represent black people in the corporate world by being a CEO or provide a model to prove that Latinos can succeed in business by suceeding in business themselves.

Kivel, like many misled whites has not come to the realization that having a deep love and appreciation for your own kinsmen is not being racist to others. Whites need not be apologetic about their culture, principles or skin color. The very fact that it is emphasized that WHITES must work towards Racial Justice implies that racism is a white only problem. The difference between the average white and black person when it comes to racism is that the black person will make a song and dance about the situation, while a white person, under the same circumstances will move on regardless. When will we see a book on black racism that is so rife in Africa?
