Amazon.co.uk

War is hell, but if you prepare properly for war, there's not much about life that will take you by surprise. At least, that's the premise of Unleashing the Warrior Within, in which Machowicz takes the lessons he learned as a Navy SEAL and applies them to real-life situations.

In war, for example, you learn that there are three dynamic elements of combat: target, weapons, movement. The target dictates the weapons, and the weapons dictate movement. In real life, your target is what you want; your weapons are your skills; and movement is whatever you need to get in position to use your skills. But, since deciding upon a target is the step that's most troubling to people, he adds another wartime analytical tool called the CARVER matrix. You lay out various targets you may have in life--a better job, getting in shape, buying a new house, and taking on a new business partner, say. Then you assess the Criticality, Accessibility, Recognisability, and Vulnerability of the target, plus its Effect on your overall mission in life, and the potential Return on your effort.

Machowicz calls his philosophy Bukido, and if you take his classes in Los Angeles, you learn self-defence along with these life-improvement skills. In this book, the object is to get you to choose a mission that is closest and most important to you, and then achieve your goals with military precision. By the time you're through learning the seven principles of combat, what you've really learned is how to think critically and focus your efforts. Machowicz uses his students as examples of how the enemy in life is really a lack of action, allowing life to take you along for a ride. So if your current target is a solid self-improvement course, Unleashing the Warrior Within could be your most effective weapon. --Lou Schuler -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Me, a warrior? 3. Mai 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I first heard about this book on the NPR show, "The Loh Life," by Sandra Tsing Loh. She's hilarious, and I love her stuff. She talked about how this middle-aged, out-of-shape group of her writer friends had found this book, were raving about it, and now were inspired to get things done like a Navy SEAL. The piece was so funny I just had to get a copy of this book-even though it's nothing like anything else on my bookshelf (does this guy look scary or what? ).

After the first couple of pages I found myself really engaged by the story, because it's as if he's sitting down and just spinning a good yarn. The advice is so completely practical, and very precise. It never gets either too abstract or too mystical to be applicable to the kinds of things you find yourself up against every day. I'd like to say that since I finished this book I've become a millionaire, am perfect in all my relationships and finished the great American novel. Sorry, hasn't happened. But I do find myself being more conscious about the way I talk to myself and the fear I have-it's also easier to see these things working in other people. I've decided my "target" is not to start anything new, but to finally finish all the things I've never gotten around to completing. I thought it was a fun, quick read with advice you can take out and use immediately. (I'd also recommend this book for teenagers, by the way.)

I have read the book twice and have done the exercises, all I can say is... THIS STUFF WORKS!

When a friend of mine gave it to me as a gift for my birthday, my first thought was that it looked a little to extreme for me. I then thanked my friend appropriately, as any good friend would do. I really had no intention to read it; my plan was to put it on my bookshelf with all of the other books I had no intention to read. But, I forgot it in the car when my wife and I cleaned out the other presents. So two days later, I take my wife to the mall. I get bored (as men tend to do when women go shopping, I think this is due to our limited decorative attention spans) and decide to go back to the car and listen to a ball game on the radio. No luck, no game, still bored, find book, begin to read book.

I said all that to say this: I nearly miss a chance to read a book that has changed the way I look at my life. It helped me address fears I never knew I had, but it was done in a way that never made me feel as though I was a screw-up. I can't believe that I'm saying this, but this was a self-help book that was exciting to read. That is why I had to read it twice, because I barely absorbed a lot of important ideas on my first pass. I called my friend and thanked him again for his wonderful gift and his amazing good taste. I came to Amazon.com to buy the book for him.

Please don't buy this book because of this review; buy it because you want to find out more about yourself.

"Unleashing the Warrior Within" is far more than a mere rehash of longstanding martial arts principles. As a practicing mental health professional and a Zen Buddhist priest, I've found its teachings invaluable in mobilizing commitment to accomplishing difficult goals, especially in situations where ambivalence and self-doubt have been getting in the way.

Bukido is far more than a fighting system; it is about living with clarity and responsibility, and acting with all one's being to accomplish what needs to be accomplished.

As an aspect of meditation in action, it brings a vivid and balanced sensibility into the arena of stress management and decision-making. Machowicz' cognitive strategies for assessing situations and developing optimal responses form an especially well-grounded model for all walks of life.

This is not just a book to be read and set aside; it should be re-read many times to allow its deceptively simple principles to unfold in the life of the reader.
