YA Over 150 Confederate and Union army uniforms are stunningly illustrated in 64 color plates in Haythornthwaite's handbook. The text includes a historical introduction to the Civil War and its major campaigns, along with descriptions of artillery, firearms and edged weapons used, such as swords, knives and lances. There are brief descriptions of over 60 uniforms which are not illustrated. The major portion of the text is a description of the uniforms shown in the color plates. Eighty-two pages of beautiful color plates illustrate Uniforms of the American Revolution. British, French, German, American and American Indian uniforms and dress are shown in great detail, along with plates of flags, ornaments and weapons, where known. The introduction summarizes the war, and the text lists the organization of the various armies. A major portion of the text is devoted to a concise summary of the conditions under which each uniform was worn. In both books, the information is separated from the plate by many pages. Also, the contents pages are of little help in locating all of the information without lengthy browsing, and there are no indexes. However, there is a wealth of material in these volumes, which will be of interest to students studying American history as well as to those who just enjoy browsing. The book was great, just what I was looking for. I am working on some Miniatures for a game I am making and the detail about the uniforms and the units was exteremly helpful. For an older paperback book. It wa sin great shape with no stains or creases and only a little yellowing. The delivery was fast and the book was in the condition advertised, so I am a ver happy cutomer. I would do business with them again in the future.
Excellent Source for Civil War Uniforms

Haythornthwaite has produced an excellent source for anyone interested in how soldiers of both sides were equipped during the Civil War.
The author has produced attractive color pictures of uniforms, hats, swords, and muskets for both sides. With each uniform picture, a brief history of the unit is provided.
All in all, an excellent source of information and highly recommended!

Back in it's day this book was one of few books that catered to Civil War uniforms. At this date the book would best serve the owner as a doorstop. If you're looking for a book that shows accurate reconstructions of Civil War uniforms this will not fit the bill. There are too many inaccuracies in this book to list. ~Gary
