From School Library Journal
YA Over 150 Confederate and Union army uniforms are stunningly illustrated in 64 color plates in Haythornthwaite's handbook. The text includes a historical introduction to the Civil War and its major campaigns, along with descriptions of artillery, firearms and edged weapons used, such as swords, knives and lances. There are brief descriptions of over 60 uniforms which are not illustrated. The major portion of the text is a description of the uniforms shown in the color plates. Eighty-two pages of beautiful color plates illustrate Uniforms of the American Revolution. British, French, German, American and American Indian uniforms and dress are shown in great detail, along with plates of flags, ornaments and weapons, where known. The introduction summarizes the war, and the text lists the organization of the various armies. A major portion of the text is devoted to a concise summary of the conditions under which each uniform was worn. In both books, the information is separated from the plate by many pages. Also, the contents pages are of little help in locating all of the information without lengthy browsing, and there are no indexes. However, there is a wealth of material in these volumes, which will be of interest to students studying American history as well as to those who just enjoy browsing.
