Understanding Morphology presents an introduction to the study of word structure that starts at the very beginning. Assuming no knowledge of the field of morphology on the part of the reader, the book presents a broad range of morphological phenomena from a wide variety of languages. Starting with the core areas of inflection and derivation, the book presents the interfaces between morphology and syntax and between morphology and phonology. The synchronic study of word structure is covered, as are the phenomena of diachronic change, such as analogy and grammaticalization. Theories are presented clearly in accessible language with the main purpose of shedding light on the data, rather than as a goal in themselves. The authors consistently draw on the best research available, thus utilizing and discussing both functionalist and generative theoretical approaches. Each chapter includes a summary, suggestions for further reading, and exercises. As such this is the ideal book for both beginning students of linguistics, or anyone in a related discipline looking for a first introduction to morphology.

This is the best introduction to the field of morphology that I know. The author shows the different morphological patterns with examples from many different languages, but he always keeps in mind the intended addressees, i.e. students with little knowledge of linguistics.

This book is about morphology and contains everything you would expect: What morphology is good for in general, what lexemes, bases, roots are, inflection, derivation, productivity, affixes ... It explains easily, giving you several common theories and pros and cons of them and contains lots of examples from many languages. Now after reading I feel like a professional and started thinking like a linguist: "Oh, why is Welpe male and Elfe female? Why is plural of Schal Schals and not Schale?" (people tell me because it would be ambiguous, but whatever) It's a really useful book I like very much. But one bad thing: I asked several foreign friends to look at some of the examples: The Persian "mundaen" p. 131 is common speech, so it's wrong in that way and must be "mandaen" (don't know, if I write it right). The Vitnamese example p. 4 is completely wrong: My friend said, that may be the font set it wrong. The letters are missing extra chars, I can't give you here. :)
The Persian example is maybe the fault of the book the author citates from. The Vitnamese example is a font problem and could be made better. It's no problem for making morphological examples clear, but what kind of impression do people get, if a linguist's text book is wrong in that way?
Too bad, but apart from that I recommend this book.

It's a good book. It definitely help me with my homework, but we didn't cover a lot of the chapters in class.

The specific copy that I received was in great condition as guaranteed at purchase. The textbook is very accessible and reads very well. I usually have difficulty digesting a lot of detail but everything from the typesetting to the content really makes me glad my professor chose to use this Morphology textbook over others.
