After reading through Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure (revised edition), I thought I’d write down my opinion of the book.
Peterson explains what exposure is and the three deciding factors: f-stop, shutter speed and ISO. His explanations are clear and easy to follow, especially that of ISO (using bees with buckets of water as a superb analogy).
Both f-stop and shutter speed variations are shown with good examples, allowing one to quickly see how each can change an image. Another excellent point he makes is that a photographer can make many correct exposures of a scene, but only one “artistically correct” exposure, which is good to keep in mind.
He discusses exposure meters and sometimes describes them as thinking (even talking!) things. I find this way of thinking very misleading, and not useful when trying to figure out just how an exposure meter works and what it does.
One of my major problems with the book is the section on Mr. Green Jeans and the Sky Brothers (which are methods of achieving the correct exposure). I have tried these two techniques and find them to be very haphazard ways of working as it all depends on the lighting and the scene you are taking a picture of. Sometimes it works, of course, but it isn’t a hard and fast rule you can apply all the time, and in this aspect, such tips are misleading and can lead to completely incorrect exposures. It would have been more useful if he had mentioned the fact that we should meter off something in the scene which is (or which we want to be) mid-grey – and to be fair, he does mention grey cards and the palm of the hand, but doesn’t bring these techniques together with the ones mentioned above.
One thing which probably makes the book appealing to beginners is the methodology which spans throughout. If you are taking your first steps with this type of photography, a sound method should not be done without, and in this way Peterson’s book will most certainly help the inexperienced photographer gain ground.
I think in general this book is good for people who are new to (or unsure of) manually using their camera. For those who aren’t sure what difference the f-stop and the shutter speed make, the book gives you a good solid base from which to work. If you already have some experience, the book probably won’t teach you all that much, but it is an easy and enjoyable read.

There are those photographers who understand exposure and those who do not. Whatever your own level of experience with either (or both) digital or film camera, this book will, at one of the scale, teach the novice a great deal about the subject. At the other end, there will be few professional or highly competent amateur photographers who could fail to learn something from this excellent work. In short, there is something for everyone in this book and, even a brief flick through the pages, is enough to generate ideas.
I particularly like the way in which the book is laid out. A great deal of thought went into a design which allows readers to build on what has been covered so far as they progress through the work. Beginning with; Defining Exposure, the author devotes considerable time to each of the main headings which also include; Aperture, Shutter Speed, Light and penultimately; Special Techniques and Filters. Finally, there is a discussion on Film vs. Digital which might be useful for those photographers who are still not convinced by the new technology.
Speaking as a self-taught photographer whose own pictures have been widely published for over 30 years, this book has explained much that I did not previously understand as well as, perhaps, I should have.
Approx. A4 size, with one of the nicest dedications I have ever come across, there are 160 pages containing 150 colour illustrations which cover just about every spectrum of the subject. These include sport, natural history, portraits, people at work, landscapes, close up, mood shots - and a great deal more. As I said, something for just about everyone.

Dieses Buch richtet sich an Einsteiger oder Amateure, die sich eine substantielle Einführung in die Photographie verabreichen wollen. Das Buch ist didaktische sehr gut gemacht. Es wird erklärt, wie sich Blende, Zeit, ASA und Objektiv zueinander verhalten und welche Kombinationen, wann sinnvoll sind. Dazu erklärt der Autor, welche Differenzen es bei der Digitalphotographie zur analogen Arbeitsweise gibt. Zum Beispiel ist die Tiefenschärfe bei digitalen Modellen anders als bei herkömmlichen Kameras: Mit einer digitalen Kamera kann ich bei niedrigerer Blende eine höhere Schärfentiefe erreichen, weil die Kameras anders konstruiert sind. Also Blende 5.6 bei einer Digitalen entspricht eher Blende 8 oder 11 bei einer normalen Kamera. Dies hat auch zur Folge, dass sich Nachtaufnahmen mit einer digitalen Kamera einfacher machen lassen als mit einer analogen, weil ja mit geringeren Blenden und damit schnelleren Zeiten gearbeitet werden kann.
Es ist ein Buch zum Lernen, probieren und es vermittelt viel Hintergrund. Wer seine Photographie verbessern will und noch keine fundierte Photoschule zu Rate gezogen hat, der sollte zu diesem Werk greiffen. Aber selbst Amateure, die schon ein paar Jahre fotographiert haben, werden vielleicht noch das eine oder andere aufschnappen.
Es ist ein Buch zum Lernen, probieren und es vermittelt viel Hintergrund. Wer seine Photographie verbessern will und noch keine fundierte Photoschule zu Rate gezogen hat, der sollte zu diesem Werk greiffen. Aber selbst Amateure, die schon ein paar Jahre fotographiert haben, werden vielleicht noch das eine oder andere aufschnappen.
