Synopsis

From the author of GIVE US A KISS and THE ONES YOU DO, a crime thriller which sees the death of a prominent black councilman whose murder is disguised as a bungled burglary. 1.0 von 5 Sternen What a thoroughly awful book! 7. November 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
If there was a rating lower than one star, I would use it.

This book is a real bottom feeder. It's filled with sludge....racism, profanity, dehumanization, sexism and, yes, violence as well. Since the author has other, better books the only possible excuse for this book is that he was trying to spoof the old hardboiled detective genre...and missed by about a million miles.

I can see no reason to explore the lives and motives of such stereotyped characters, who are thoroughly awful humans, shallow and (thank goodness!) unbelievable.

I am not easily offended, and in fact like some of this author's other work. But this book is a total waste of time and money.

Do yourself (and the author) a big favor and skip this one!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful Grit 10. November 2008
Von Ken Tekell, Jr - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Daniel Woodrell is probably not a household name unless you are at my house. I confess up front that Woodrell is top five on my list of living crime writers. So even though this, his first novel, may have a few holes, I enjoyed it nonetheless primarily due to his fabulous gift of prose.

Rene Shade, a retired professional boxer of dubious talents, is now a detective on the Saint Bruno police force. His family has strong ties to the community with one brother a city attorney and the other the owner of a rough and seedy watering hole frequented by the who's who of local criminals. Shade's mother operates a pool hall (above which Shade lives) and his father is only a rumor, having long ago abandoned the family to pursue his gambling career.

In this story our hero is assigned to investigate the murder of a local black political boss. Within moments of surveying the crime scene in the victim's home he knows that this was a premeditated kill and not a burglary gone wrong, the conclusion the Mayor wants drawn. However, rather than following his superior's instructions to find it a random shooting, Shade and his partner, How Blanchete, investigate what they know to be a political hit.

The plot and pacing is good but leaves a few fizzled plot lines such as the conflict between Shade and his attorney brother who expects the investigation to be quickly resolved to the Mayor's satisfaction. This confrontation is set up early but is never revisited or resolved. Other seemingly important characters are introduced and then disappear without re-emerging.

However, the somewhat pedestrian plot is far outshined by Woodrell's words. He is such a powerful writer that the other shortcomings seem unimportant. The sharp dialogue is authentic, blending nicely with the steamy, fetid southern bayou atmosphere that is also done so well by James Lee Burke. While Shade himself is a strong main character, the rookie hitman, Jewel Cobb, is equally terrific as a best supporting actor. Woodrell paints the perfect picture of a nieve young country boy who thinks he has what it takes to dish out violence and crime in the big city. The brash and foolish Cobb soon collapses under the pressure of actual violence meted out by actual bad guys.

Under the Bright Lights is a strong start for a terrific writer. The contrast of lyrical wording and raw violence are well mixed for a fabulous read. Even if you never go on to enjoy any other works by Woodrell (and I strongly urge that you do) this book can stand on its own as a terrific example of southern literature or what the author refers to as "Country Noir."

4.0 von 5 Sternen The Best Writer You've Never Heard Of 27. Februar 2008
Von A Russell - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Not long ago a friend of mine, who is a famous writer and great writing teacher, told me that Daniel Woodrell deserves to be listed among the best contemporary English language writers. Not in the U.S., but the world. Not in crime, mystery or thriller, but all categories.

I've now read everything Woodrell has written and I agree that he is something else altogether. I started at the beginning and read each in order and he gets better every book. When is he going to be famous and sell like mad? I don't know, but it has to happen. Read him now, so you can tell your pals that you knew him when.
3.0 von 5 Sternen Woodrell's First Book: Hard-Boiled Southern Crime 1. August 2012
Von Nicola Manning - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Reason for Reading: I am in the process of reading all of the author's works. This is his first book.

Being Woodrell's first book, this is very different from what he has become known for, that is his Ozarks fiction of poverty ridden families. "Under the Bright Lights" is the first in a trilogy of hard-boiled Philip Marlow-esque, deep south, southern fiction, police procedural crime stories. Quite a mix of genres there that is a little clumsy for a first time writer, but pulls together nicely by the middle of the book and shows where Woodrell is going to go with his future books. Set in fictional Saint Bruno, the state is never mentioned, but the geographical clues lead me to believe we're looking at Louisiana.

Rene Shade is the main character, a police Detective, once former boxer, who made it to the championship, but lost. Small rather rural town-city where everyone knows everyone Shade can't live down his boxer reputation which has its perks as wells as cons, being an upholder of the law now. This is a mystery where we are first introduced to the killer, his kill and his flight and we then follow the police as they search their way through the clues and intuitions to discover that killer. But as often happens, one murder leads to another and Shade has his hands full. We are sent into the underbelly where we find semi-crooked politicians, porn kings, gangs (the new mafia-type controllers of the city) territorial gang fights and those who get involved in this seedy world. A violet book, sad and brutal. It did take me some time to get into it but once I did I was hooked. The main theme revolves around the French gang versus the Black gang with Shade and the police caught in the middle trying to catch the culprit behind all the killings, not necessarily just the trigger man.

A good book if you enjoy noir mysteries or Southern fiction mystery. Word to the sensitive though, the book does contain a lot of racist language (the n-word and equally offensive descriptors for other ethnic groups) which while unpleasant is totally in sync with the times and these particular characters. I've enjoyed the two Ozarks books read so far, but this was interesting and shows the author's raw talent. Will be interested to see how he develops as an author over the course of the next two books in the trilogy.
