Here it is....the beginning of the end....in two instances in fact. This story sets in motion the events that will lead to a horrific event called Ultimatum. But this story also begins the dark reign of Jeph Loeb on Ultimate Marvel. Now to be fair, Jeph Loeb isn't a terrible writer, he actually somewhat improved as the Ultimates line relaunched as Ultimate Comics. But Ultimates 3 and Ulitmatum are two his most hated stories in the Ultimate Marvel Universe. Loeb has some great ideas I will give him that, but where he seems to falter and fail, is when it comes to implementing and executing these ideas, Ultimates 3 is definitely an instance of this. It's hard to even accept that this takes place in the same universe as Mark Millar's fantastic Ultimates series but alas it did. Some of the jokes are absolutely terrible. The plot is way too quick and cheap. The villain who is one of Marvel's most iconic villains is just reduced to someone that felt jammed in at the end. Lastly, the artwork may be considered one of the saving graces of this book, but to me it wasn't. Many of the characters are wearing their Marvel 616 costumes (mainstream Marvel Universe) which are cool, yes. But the Ultimates Universe had a unique style and tone to it that differentiated it from the mainstream universe and that was conveyed at times through the costumes. In this case it just felt weird and strange seeing these characters who are nowhere near the same as their 616 counterparts running around and wearing their costumes.

HASH(0xa0a626a8) von 5 Sternen Jeph Loeb is the M. Night Shyamalan of comics. 17. Juli 2015

I knew what I was getting into when I read it, a terrible story with good art. While the art was great, the story was terrible. Many scenes seemed to have sex forced into them, the Wolverine flashback, Tony Stark's sex tape seemed like it was going to be set up as a major plot point but at the end seemed pointless. And like many instances it seemed totally out of character and reason for Tony to be distraught over the tape. For one, Black Widow was his fiancee and two, at the end of Ultimates 2, Tony seems to have gotten over her quickly after deciding to pursue another woman. But, then again it seems Loeb only read the last issue of Ultimates 2 and decided that is all he needed to know. And seeing Joe Mad's art of Hawkeye, I assumed he would be the coolest character but he is actually the most annoying. I guess Loeb wanted us to think he has some kind of death wish, but he comes off as an annoying teenager with issues with authority figures. And he is supposed to be a grown man. (But I did laugh pretty hard at the "Watch your language."/"$@#% you, too" exchange, but I don't know if it was meant to be funny) Now into SPOILER TERRITORY but honestly knowing what happens isn't going to ruin the experience because it makes no sense. There are so many instances where Loeb realizes his plot holes through his characters and dismisses them as unimportant. Valkyrie esentially says to Thor "Last book I had no powers and was Hank Pym's groupie. Now, I have powers and a flying horse and I am your girlfriend? Isn't it weird no one wonders why" and Thor says word for word "It is as it is. Believe in thyself." Multiple times this happens. When Captain America decides to live out his fantasy of being a black man for the majority of the story pretendiing to be Black Panther (it is never made clear if the Black Panther was even really on the team, I like to think Steve was him the whole time), it isn't given a purpose. Wasp asks why he pretended and he's all, "We'll talk about it later, let's just beat up Magneto.." I literally can't for the life of me figure why he does this. Is it just so there can be a reveal? It isn't played off well. Jeph Loeb is the M. Night Shymalan of comics. Throwing in a "twist" in every comic, in this one the only surprising twist is when an "Ultron" bot turns out to be masquerading as Iron Man. And only because it's stupid. Also, making Wolverine a possible biological father to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver is probably one of the biggest "Huh?" moments I've had reading comics. Magneto doesn't seem like the type of guy who would let someone who banged his wife on his Brotherhood of Mutants. END OF SPOILERS(?) I only paid $5 on a very good used copy, and I'd say it was about worth that. Mostly for the art. This is great for inspiration that anyone can get into writing comics. It reads like something i could have written my freshman year of high school. I thought the art would be good enough to save it but it barely does so. Since i can't give it 2.5 stars, I'll be generous with 3. I wouldn't recommend paying full price but if you like stuff that is slightly entertaining because of how bad it is, this is for you.

First off, was not familiar with the other ultimates books before reading this... have to agree with other comments that the plot is on the weak side, but the art is AMAZING and more than makes up for that IMO. Highly recommended if you are a fan of Joe Madureira and his style!

Not a great as the first or second story, but a good addition to complete the tale that was started with the first volume.
