Verständlich und ohne großen Ballast geschrieben. Ordentliche Mischung aus Grundlagen und Übungen. Die herunterladbaren Audiobeispiele sind sehr hilfreich, allerdings etwas umständlich herunterzuladen.

A must have for any uke player! 14. Mai 2013
Von maria - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is an absolute must for any ukulele player. The exercises are explained clearly for beginners but are designed to be useful to players of any level. More experienced players will find these exercises will strengthen and fine tune the skills and techniques they already have and perhaps introduce a few the didn't realize they needed!

I've been a uke teacher for 15+ years and have devoured all the books I could get my hands on. This one stands out as one I consider essential for every student. Not only are the exercises perfect for skill building but they are fun! Most student hate drills/scales/exercises, etc but these are fun enough to want to do them and challenging enough to want to spend time working on them. Those are rare and wonderful qualities in books of this kind.

Everything is covered in a friendly, accessible, comprehensive way. If you like Brett's lessons on his website, [...] you will love this book. It is written in the same clear and comfortable manner with which Brett teaches. Wonderful!

Again, as both a uke player/enthusiast and a uke teacher, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

First impression: Very nice for intermediate players ... 14. April 2013
Von Roberto Yunes - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
The book involves two downloads: the book itself via amazon, and the mp3 files corresponding to the exercises, via Wiley's online place. I have no problems at all with any of them; both downloaded quickly, and it was very easy to find Wiley's place. Also, I did not have any problem at all by dealing with the book, on the one hand, and the mp3 files, on the other one. Just by jumping from one to the other -a one click procedure- I was in business. Since I bought the book a few days ago, I don't have the possibility of judging completely its contents. However, by examining two or three chapters, and by looking at specific items on several more chapters, I think the book is both engaging and a really nice tool to drive deeper your playing skills. It is the kind of book you will be working with for a long time. However, If you are an absolute beginner, there are probably better options for you. The only thing I did not like at all was the fact that the songs that involve lyrics are not sung by the author (he sings really nice: check his online videos). It would be nice to have both versions of the song: the music only version and the sung one. Particularly important since many of the potential buyers are foreigners and do not know the songs (my own situation). Maybe an early addition since it involves just adding a few mp3's to the long list of 256 exercises? Not kidding, it would be a very welcome addition. In brief, if you play ukulele and want to improve your skills, just got this one!

PS: one more thing: the book is completely readable and feels confortable in any of my devices (my android smartphone of 4.5", as well as my android tablet of 10.1" and my MacBook Pro).

Excellent book, with too few examples and poor song choices 19. Juli 2013
Von Tarah Tamayo - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Here's where I'm coming from: I am, perhaps, an advanced beginner at the instrument. I received this book as a gift about a week ago. I probably practice too much.

This is at its heart an exercise book. It's absolutely excellent for that - I've only spent about a week on it and see plenty of places I will improve from. It's also a great book for jumping around in. If you're a middling to advanced beginner (for me, I know all the important chords well, with one or two strumming patterns and no fingerpicking) this will help you advance. No, I haven't completed it - but this has already demystified strumming patterns for me (practice slow at first, then bring the speed up to the listed rate on the example song). I also now have a good understanding (if not ability) of how arpeggios work and I will be working on those.

There are a good number of example songs, though I'd have liked to see more (one per strumming pattern, for example). There is still a good deal of footwork involved for the reader to produce more lengthy exercises on trouble spots. Strumming patterns, for example, are typically two measures long. This is far too short to make an interesting exercise (though it may be effective) and playing it in a song really makes the pattern understandable. I'm only asking for 3-4 lines of music, not complete songs. Other books have complete songs - this one should have had snippets, and in greater numbers. For that it loses a star (half a star, perhaps).

The song choices are seasonal... Christmas music is appropriate for no more than a month or two of the year (less, if you don't go shopping after Halloween). "Jingle Bells," "O Holy Night," and "O Little Town of Bethlehem" are a third of the example pieces in the strumming section. "Silent Night" appears in fingerpicking. "Angels We Have Heard On High," "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," "Coventry Carol," and "Joy to the World" are the majority of the songs in the fretboard (chords & scales) section. One of the authors must have loved Christmas music, but year-round songs could have been chosen. This is the other star lost.

I haven't purchased a hard-copy "dummies" book in a number of years, but the paper and binding quality is similar to a book of crossword puzzles. I can't see this book lasting long.

3.5 stars, but its shortcomings can be overcome with reader effort to make this your most important daily resource.

Excellent book for intermediate player 19. Mai 2013
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is an excellent book for the intermediate ukulele player wanting to go beyond basic strumming chords to songs. It explains advanced techniques and then gives exercises so the reader can learn them. The explanations are easy to follow. There are plenty of exercises for the reader to build both understanding and muscle memory of unfamiliar movements. One thing I liked about this book is frequent mention of the difficulties a learner is likely to experience while trying to learn new skills. The author would then make suggestions how to tackle the difficulties, as well as giving lots of encouragement. Very learner oriented!

Would this book be suitable for the absolute beginner? Maybe; maybe not. I get the feeling this book might be one step beyond most beginners.

As a book teaching intermediate and advanced techniques, it is superb. The main strength is that it teaches from a very low level of ability (usually nil ability) and gradually builds the learner's skill, step-by-step. The learner isn't suddenly pitched into the deep end with some impossibly difficult exercises. Another strength of the book is the comprehensiveness of the skills taught. For example, in teaching finger picking notes for songs, the book not only teaches you what the picking hand should be doing, it also teaches you the finger movements of the other (fretting) hand. Most finger picking books tend to leave that out.

Great book for moving on from beginner level 5. Mai 2013
Von r hamilton - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This is a very well put together easy to follow book with a series of excellent and genuinely interesting exercises. I haven't had it long but I'm finding it really useful as a beginner type player wanting to move forward. The
Mp3 downloads are a great adjunct. I would highly recommend this book for those with some ukulele skills who want a guide to progressing their playing.
