1.0 von 5 Sternen A good idea destoryed by terrible writing. 23. Oktober 2012

Book Review: U.W.O.D. Ultimate Weapon of Destruction by KOJA
Reviewed by J Bryden Lloyd

Writing Style - 1.5/5.0 (Very Poor)
There is little or no flow in this work at all, leading to the obvious assumption that it was written in another language and VERY badly translated.
To this end, where there are moments of lucidity within the text, these are instantly followed by everything from incorrect tenses, words, structure and grammar (often all at once).
This is incredibly dificult to read and follow, though I presevered over two days to read the whole book and made a genuine effort to understand and follow the story.

Character Development - 1.0/5.0 (Bad)
There was little or no development within any of the characters, who seemed to change opinions, beliefs and allegiances with little reason or consideration, throughout the book.
Things happen quickly, and I do mean QUICKLY, in this regard. Often requiring only a simple statement of 'You can trust me', to get a character welcomed into the 'team' who seem to be on a voyage where, even when they get lost they seem to know where they are, and find themselves close to where they need to go.
Within this there is no room left for the characters to do anything other than fall from one fight to another, and another. No depth, no individualism, nothing of interest in any of them.

Descriptive - 1.5/5.0 (Very Poor)
There is some descriptive, though I feel the translation has effectively rendered it utterly useless for the most part. At the same time, there is little descriptive for any of the characters at any time, beyond specific features, for example, one of the aliens has a large head, but that is all you are told, so he could be anything from a 3ft tall mushroom to some leviathan who won't fit through a doorway. There's simply not enough to go on, and this is the sort of story where your imagination needs a starting point, as there are so many environs and species at play in the story.

Language & Grammar - 0.5/5.0 (Terrible)
Simply put, the use of language is decimated by bad, almost juvenile English, with vague technical language thrown in to make things sound better - which they don't.
The only positive in the grammar is that someone has gone out of their way to correctly punctuate the vast majority of the text, but around this you have highly questionable word selection, no skill of phrasing, or variety within the structure to make this any more readable.

Plot - 2.5/5.0 (Average) - MINOR SPOILERS
As a redeeming feature, there IS a viable plot here, which revolves around a war that has raged for centuries, and a group of would-be-heroes determined to bring it to an end. Undoubtedly this could have been a longer book, though in this form, I'm SO glad it isn't.
The characters don't help, not being strong enough to make this into the story it deserves to be, which is a shame.
The U.W.O.D. of the title, is little more than a 'cursed' sword-like device, but even this is not properly developed into the story.

General - 1.0/5.0 (Bad)
There was little in this to make it worth anything like the $4-plus being charged for it. The sample really is the tip of a rather ugly iceberg you will do best to avoid.
In over thirty years of reading sci-fi, this is genuinely the first time I can honestly say I feel cheated, not so much by the author (unless it was he who made the translation from his native tongue) but by whoever told him this was fit for the English-reading market ANYWHERE in the world.

This could be so much better, certainly the story is there to make it into something many would find of interest, but at the moment it's not really worthy of a star, but that's as bad as I can manage.
