Fantastic Historical Primary Source 25. Dezember 2004
Von Seth D. Benton - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Unlike most autobiographies of WWII, this one was written before the War was even over. It was written sometime between Scapa Flow, and Prien's loss in action in 1941. If you are looking for a blow by blow account of convoy battles, or even the raid into Scapa Flow, then you will be disappointed. BUT, if you are looking for a fascinating glimpse into the German mindset at the beginning of the 1940's, this is the book for you.

The book spends relatively little time discussing Prien's adventures in WWII, but concentrates on his coming of age as a 16 year old cabin boy in the Merchant Marine and Labor Corps.

Prien's memoir has more in common with those of Herzen, Tolstoy, and Gogol, than those of Doenitz, Werner, or Guderian. Extolling the Germanic virtures of loyalty, honor, and perseverence in the face of hardship, Prien describes how his traditional upbringing made him a great man and war hero.

And, on page 2, he is already talking about black-eyed, pointy-nosed merchants....

A must read for the student of German social history. I wonder if this is the basis for the u-boat captain in "Cat and Mouse"?

Not the whole truth 11. August 2010
Von Kapt.Prien - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
At first I thought this was the truth (when I had read it back in 2005), but when I came to read Nightmare at Scapa Flow along with The Royal Oak Disaster, I soon learned that this book is largely lies, distortions, etc. brought about by Paul Weymar who had ghostwritten the book during the war as Mein Weg Nach Scapa Flow.

There was no Pfalzburg, but rather a second Cape Horn ship known now as the Suomen Joutsen (back then as the Oldenburg). Jost Metzler's book The Laughing Cow even mentions having served on this ship with Prien...and that is just one of the many distortions in the book.

I advise readers if they choose to buy this - to also buy Nightmare at Scapa Flow and The Royal Oak Disaster to learn more of the truth.

The Star U BOOT Commander 31. Oktober 2012
Von Mbwa Kali Sana - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Günther PRIEN is by far the best known U Boot Commander of World War 2 .If not it's top ace .Carefully selected by Admiral DÖNITZ to penetrate the "unpenetrable " Bay of SCAPA FLOW" ,Base of the British Home Fleet ,at the begining of the War(1939 ) he sank the mighty battleship ROYAL OAK and managed to escape without sustaining any damage .He was not liked by his men ,but respected ,while OTTO KRETSCHMER or WOLFGANG LÜTZ were adored :he drove his crew very hard indeed and obtained from them the best they could give .This book is not the best account of the extraordinary feats of Korvetten Kapitän Günther PRIEN(It is written by himself ) but it is sober and well written .The fan of German U Boots like me(As a young Naval Architect and Engineer at the French Navy I personally navigated on these "boots" Type 7 ,Type 9 type 21, after the war and repaired them while serving at the "Kolossal "Submarine Bunker Base in LORIENT and know them from A to Z )should read how Günther PRIEN was finally and quite unhappily sunk by the Depth charges launched by HMS WOLVERINE ,despite his experience ,his cunning and his cleverness .The exact crcumstances of the sinking of his famous U 47 are not well known :some say he was sunk by one of his own torpedoes who circled back and hit the boot .The truth will be known only when the ship shall one day be found on the bottom of the sea,if it has not been blown up completely
More sea memoir than war book. 8. August 2010
Von MarsTwain - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
Agree with both reviewers below. A well-written, detailed and highly interesting look at where one of Germany's U-boat legends began. Like most memoirs I've found that begin at or before WWI, Prien's reads almost non-partisan. The enemy isn't derided or insulted: he's just the guy on the other side doing his job as you are. If you didn't know he was German, you could be reading the memories of a British merchantman or a US submariner. The clipper ships he began in are fully half of the book too, so it's not a book about the war. It's a book about one man's experiences at sea, both in the merchant marine and during wartime.
(In response to the first reviewer's remark about who might have been based on Prien, I do know that the commander in the movie Das Boot, played by Jurgen Prochknow, was based heavily on him.)
U-Boat Commander Gunther Prien 1. April 2013
Von Larry Vanerwegen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

A lot of historical stuff about his childhood which obviously leads to the man he became. But there was little, really, about the U-bopat commander and how he made his decisions as Captain and his command style. The attack on the royal oak was maybe 10 pages.
