Ich habe schon einige Bücher über TYPO3 gelesen und manchmal nach ein paar Seiten weggelegt. Entweder war das Buch überholt oder es gab nur viele Seiten Screenshots oder es war trockene Theorie.
Dieses Buch gefällt mir. Ich hab erst 7 von 11 Kapitel durch, aber das möchte ich unbedingt empfehlen. Das Englisch ist gut zu verstehen. Es macht Spaß zu lesen, wie sich die Geschichte immer weiter entwickelt.
Auf ca. 300 lernt man die Grundzüge, wie man mit TYPO3 und der Erweiterung TemplaVoila Templates anlegt, nutzt und verwaltet. Auch wenn man TYPO3 schon kennt, lernt man hier am Rande einige Kleinigkeiten wie "Breadcrumb"-Navigation, grafische Menüs mit seinem Lieblings-Font oder eine Drucker- oder Mobilgeräte-freundliche Version der Internetseite.
Ich mag den Schreibstil von Jeremy Greenawalt. Er hat alles ganz vorsichtig in eine Rahmengeschichte gepackt: Zeig deinem Boss, wie cool TYPO3 ist und was du mit Templates alles anstellen kannst bzw. auf die Anforderungen schell eingehen kannst.
Greenawalt kennt TYPO3 offenbar von Anfang an. Er kennt auch die Probleme und die Konflikte, die zwischen Seitenentwickler und Redakteuren auftreten können. Seine Erfahrung und seine Fähigkeit, gut strukturiert schreiben zu können, macht das Buch lesenswert. So wird das Wissen immer weiter aufgebaut, im nächsten Kapitel/Beispiel ein bisschen wiederholt und schon geht es weiter. Sehr guter Lerneffekt, finde ich.
Wie jedes TYPO3-Buch, muss es viele Screenshots einsetzen. Anders kann man der Beschreibung nicht folgen. Greenawalt hat viele gemacht aber nicht mehr, als man wirklich braucht.
Ich bin zwar immer noch kein TemplaVoila-Fan. Aber das Buch ist top!

Typo3 ist gar nicht einfach zu beherrschen und das gilt ins Besonderes für Templates. Es ist an zu befehlen schon einige Erfahrung mit Typo3 zu haben, sonst ist es zu schwer zu verstehen warum es sich eigentlich handelt und scheinen Templates nur eine mühsame weg zum Bauen von Sites.
Greenawalt fängt an mit einige einfache Beispiele die Grundlagen von Templates zu beschreiben. Aber passen Sie auf, sehr schnell geht er die Tiefe ein und bald muss man sich sehr gut konzentrieren um das alles zu verstehen. Es ist am besten seine Beispiele mit zu machen und selber zu spielen damit man nicht vergesst was man einige Seiten her gelesen hat.
Obwohl Greenawalt die Materie gut erklären kann und seine Stil mir recht gefallt, ist es schade dass die Redaktion von Packt viele Fehler der Grammatik nicht korrigiert hat. Manchmal ist das wirklich störend. Übrigens habe ich das auch schon bemerkt bei andere Bücher von Packt. Trotzdem würde ich dieses Buch wieder kaufen weil die Inhalt recht viel zu bieten hat.

TYPO3 templates review

I have just finished reading a TYPO3 book titled 'TYPO3 Templates' with the subtitle; 'Create and modify templates with TypoScript and TemplaVoila'.
The author of the book is Jeremy Greenawalt, web director of Vintage 56. I had never before heard of Jeremy. In fact I didn't know any Jeremies at all.
I think the title of the book is misleading. The title should have been 'Building a complete TYPO3 website with TemplaVoila'. Almost the entire book is about how to use TemplaVoila to build a full fledged multi lingual website with a newsletter and some mobile capabilities.
There are no more than three pages about creating a website with straight TypoScript, a chapter about developing websites for mobile devices and a chapter about website localization. The template autoparser is not mentioned at all. There is one paragraph mentioning that the next step (after using straight TypoScript) is mapping dynamic content elements to the HTML. But then it says; 'this process was more complicated and cannot be covered here'.
Huh? I thought the whole purpose of this book was to enlighten me about TYPO3 templates.
A pointer is given to the 'Modern Template Building' tutorial on typo3.org which does go into the process a bit more. There the template autoparser is also explained. If you take a look at the tutorial you will see that it's not THAT many pages. The whole tutorial could easily fit into this 298 page book. It's totally unclear to me why Jeremy chose to ignore TypoScript template building and only talk about TemplaVoila.
That being said . . . it's a good book about TemplaVoila. I'm going to warmly recommend this book to one of my colleagues who has TemplaVoilaFobia. There are many useful tips and tricks for TemplaVoila users. And to be fair, there is a good deal of TypoScript being covered in the course of the book. Many TypoScript objects (PAGE, TEXT, HMENU, GIFBUILDER etc.) are explained in some detail with working examples. I've learnt some things about flexible content elements I never knew before.
I also learnt about a thing called the 'TemplaVoila Framework' from busy noggin. This Framework is essentially a TYPO3 + TV introduction package which will make your life as a site builder even easier.
The book could do with a chapter about 'digging deeper' into TYPO3. This chapter would explain how to find your way around the TYPO3 community. The documentation page on typo3.org is mentioned in the first chapter, but it would have been nice to also mention [...], the TYPO3 newsgroups and several snippets sites.
I don't know how far along TYPO3 4.5 was when this book was being written. But it would have been nice to see a chapter on 'backend layouts' in TYPO3 4.5. Backend layouts free the editor from the column model in the TYPO3 backend. This is without using TemplaVoila mind you.
If you are looking for a book explaining all about TYPO3 templates then do not buy this book. If you are looking for a book explaining how to build a complete and flexible website using TemplaVoila, then this book is for you.

Typo3 has been garnering increasing attention in recent years, as evidenced in part by the growing number of books dedicated to it. But the sheer flexibility of customisation in Typo3 is difficult to learn and Greenawalt offers this book as an answer. The text's examples are written in TemplaVoila, where this lets you combine an HTML template with Typo3 commands.
The book presupposes that you know CSS, as this is used to define a common look and feel for your webpages.
One very nice feature is that you can autogenerate XML output that encapsulates many of the data structures used within Typo3. You can readily envision passing the XML onto downstream data processing packages that are more specialised to your situation.
A key idea throughout the book is that the webpages you make with Typo3 have a common top down nested structure. This lets you maintain a tidy conceptual layout, especially for a large website, and it greatly aids in debugging. The text calls the items content elements. A lot of space is devoted to showing how these elements can be laid out in a page. This should be easy to learn, as it corresponds to other types of graphic page layout tools that you may already know.
The book's examples in TemplaVoila also include many screen captures of its user interface. You can appreciate how this makes the building of data structures and templates much more intuitive and easier. The UI has been heavily worked on, to provide you with many options that are readily accessible.
Some of you might also take note of the example in Chapter 9, for making webpages for display on mobile devices, which in practice means mostly cellphones. While the example acknowledges that it is slightly kludgey, it does demonstrate how how can right now do this customisation, and make functional mobile webpages. Given the prevalence of cellphones, the example is an important use case for developers.

After reading 7 of the 11 chapters I can tell you that this book is really worth it. Worth the money and worth the time you spend on each chapter.
In about 300 pages you learn howto create and modify TYPO3 templates using the TemplaVoila extension. Even if you don't use (or like) TemplaVoila, you get lots of input for your work. Sometimes small things like howto create a breadcrumb menu, howto make graphical menus with your favorite font and howto make a mobile or printable version of your website.
I like the writing of Jeremy Greenawalt. It makes fun reading because you can imagine the small story around the main theme: Show your boss how cool is TYPO3 and your created templates.
But it's not only funny. Greenawalt knows TYPO3 from the beginning and he knows where may occure problems and conflicts e.g. with you and the editors. And he analyzed his experience and teaches you in a very good structured manner. First he is going into deep and in the next chapter there is only a little repetition. But this is enough to get further very quickly and to keep the learnd things.
The amount of screenshots (with TYPO3 always a problem) is high but not too much. You need a lot screenshots in TYPO3 to understand what is happening. Greenawalt made as much as necessary - but no more.
I like this book very much even though I knew template creation in TYPO3 already. But you never stop learning with this huge CMS. Big recommondation!
