One of Shakespeare's finest comedies, Twelfth Night was written at the same time as Hamlet and Troilus and Cressida, and whilst it shares their fascination with sex, death and confused identities, its exuberant comedy and linguistic inventiveness rises above the introspection of these plays. Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are separated in a storm, which washes them both up at different points on the shores of Illyria. Believing each other to be dead, both attempt to survive by using their wits. Viola cross-dresses and enters the service of the lovesick Orsino, in love with Olivia, an heiress in mourning for the loss of her brother. Orsino's saucy young page Cesario (Viola) soon falls in love with "his" master, who tells "him", "all is semblative a woman's part". Unfortunately, whilst Viola falls in love with Orsino, Olivia falls in love with her alter ego, Cesario, whilst also being pursued at the same time by her pompous servant Malvolio. Olivia's house is also turned upside down by the antics of her drunken uncle, Sir Toby Belch, and the whole crazy situation reaches boiling point when Sebastian reappears.

Despite the madcap plot, Twelfth Night remains one of Shakespeare's most complex and inventive comedies, fascinated with questions of cross-dressing, gender confusion, language and inversion, as well as retaining a darker edge to some of its laughter. --Jerry Brotton

Pressestimmen

'The combination of careful scholarship emphasising the inspiration and excitement of the theatrical experience, with the freshly edited text, should make this one of the most useful new texts of Twelfth Night.' Theatre Journal

5.0 von 5 Sternen This is the best Shakespeare play on audio ever 8. Juni 1998
Format:Hörkassette
Each of the Harper/Caedmon Audio series of Shakespeare's plays, originally recorded in the 60s by the Shakespeare Recording Society and now being reissued on cassette, lives up to a high standard of performance. But the "Twelfth Night" recording is, in my view, the best. The stellar cast includes a young Vanessa Redgrave as Olivia, and a hilarious Willoughby Goddard as Sir Toby. The scenes where Paul Scofield as Malvolio is deceived with a forged letter into thinking that Olivia loves him have a side-splitting humor that comes through even though the play is nearly 400 years old. The sound quality is excellent. I would have to say that this is the crown jewel of the whole Caedmon series.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Pleasantly Funny 8. April 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
Although this comedy lacks the hilarious tone of "The Comedy of Errors" or the superb construction of "Much Ado About Nothing," it is still a pretty good play. The play begins seriously enough when after an accident at sea, Viola is looking for her lost brother. She disuises herself as a man and offers her service to Orsino. The humour is well drawn when Olivia falls in love with Viola's male disguise. Also, there is some strong comedy when Viola makes some characters angry and her brother Sebastian (who resembles Viola's male identity) suffers the consequences. But the play also has some really touching moments. Viola as a man faces the hard task of assisting Orsino in his persuit of Olivia, even though she wants Orsino for herself. Shakespeare ofcourse manages to resolve everything and offer us a happy ending. If you read this, knowing not to expect Shakespeare's best, you will probably find this very pleasant.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Intro to Shakespeare 5. Dezember 1999
Von Jaxx
Format:Taschenbuch
This, being the first work of Shakespeare that I have read, already has me hypnotized into his world of unrequitted love and just consquences. Viola proves to be a powerful heroine, in both her dedication to her Duke and her brother. The side plots keep the story entertaining; the oblivious Sir Andrew,Sir Toby and Maria, with thier constant intrigues involving the self absorbed Malvolio, and Feste, always there to tie everything together and make a few extra coin. Definitly a book to be enjoyed by any interested reader
