Not for Vietnamese Learners! 24. Oktober 2009
Von Lucy Wu - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Even though this dictionary claims that it is for both Vietnamese and English learners, it's much more suited for learners of English. The English entries have IPA listed next to them while the Vietnamese entries do not! So if you are an English speaker wanting to learn Vietnamese, this would not be the best choice for a primary dictionary.

Excellent dictionary 18. Januar 2013

Examples. That's what I like most about the Tuttle Compact Vietnamese dictionary. Examples make or break a dictionary. Numerous examples make a dictionary great. The best dictionary I've ever seen is Le Petit Robert, which is just swimming in examples that do a spectacular job of showing usage. This Tuttle English-Viet dictionary isn't in the same class, obviously, since it's shorter and bilingual and far less costly, but it does a surprisingly good job of showing usage. And often you get numerous sub-entries showing how the word is used in combination -- an absolute must for Vietnamese.

The book is a solid 900 pages, and after almost a year of use, it has yet to fail me. Every word I have searched for has been there, often with an example, and often with sub-entries.

I use it almost exclusively to look up the English equivalent of a Viet word, so I can't really speak to the other direction, i.e., finding the Viet equivalent of an English word. I've hardly used it in that direction, but I have no reason to think it would let me down in that respect.

My only quibble is the font size. The size is actually fine, except for the diacritics. They can be a bit tough to distinguish, but obviously it's a trade-off: bigger font means fewer entries or longer book and higher cost. Maybe I just need to get new glasses.

I started out with a smaller dictionary when I began learning Vietnamese, but I really shouldn't have bothered. The Tuttle Compact is everything I need. Five stars.

Best I've seen 5. Mai 2011
Von vansistm - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I'm currently teaching English and studying Vietnamese in Vietnam. At first, it was really difficult for me to find a good quality English-Vietnamese/Vietnamese English dictionary here--many dictionaries published in Vietnam are only English-Vietnamese or Vietnamese-English, not both, and the quality just is not up to par. Once I tried looking up the word "salt" in Vietnamese, and it just wasn't to be found in the Vietnamese-published dictionary I had. But "salii," "saliferous," and "sardius" were. Really?

Thankfully, I was able to find the Tuttle dictionaries in the Fahasa bookstores in Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau. I bought this one, the Tuttle Compact Vietnamese Dictionary, and I've been really impressed with it. It's incredibly useful for its size and many of the headwords list idiomatic expressions and a sample sentence. I've found it really useful for helping my English students and in my own Vietnamese language learning.

It's true that this dictionary might be more geared towards English-speaking learners of Vietnamese, as the introduction is only in English. However, I don't find the criticism of there not being IPA pronunciation for the Vietnamese words concerning at all. The Vietnamese writing system is far more phonetic than the English writing system, so if you know what sound each of the letters makes in the accent of your choice, you're pretty much set. There's also a brief guide to Vietnamese pronunciation at the beginning of the book.
Good dictionary, but only a part of the puzzle 31. März 2010

This is a great dictionary for learners of English and Vietnamese. I see a lot of people complain that it has IPA for English, but not for Vietnamese. I think the reason the creators made it this way, is because you can learn to read Vietnamese in a few days of hard work, whereas many native English speakers can't read long uncommonly used English words.

The reason this product received only four stars is because it lacks a lot of USAGE. USAGE is key to learning a language, if you know a word, it doesn't help if you can't use it properly. This book is a very useful resource, but it seldom uses the words in sentences to give you and idea of how to use it properly. Luckily I know many native Vietnamese speakers, so I just throw it into conversation and ask them to correct me if I'm doing it right. Without this, I would have a lot more trouble learning Vietnamese!

Another reason I left off that last star, was because sometimes the English > Vietnamese side doesn't really give you an actual definition, rather it describes the English word. A good example would be the entry for pizza, the definition was like "a piece of an Italian pastry topped with sauce, meat and cheese." It left no mention about the fact that most Vietnamese just call it "pi-za." Luckily the Vietnamese > English side doesn't really have this problem.
