The Amsterdam of the early 17th century has been forever immortalised by the serene, precise domestic realism of the canvases of Vermeer and Rembrandt, and has been studied with meticulous care by Simon Schama in his marvellous book The Embarrassment of Riches. What Schama identified at the heart of the opulent display of conspicuous consumption in Dutch still-life painting was an anxiety about wealth and commodification which ran throughout 17th-century life in the Low Countries, an argument beautifully complemented by Ann Pavord's marvellous book on The Tulip.
Deborah Moggach's novel Tulip Fever gives both Schama and Pavord's studies a compelling fictional twist. Set in 1630s Amsterdam, it begins with a typical Renaissance love triangle: a wealthy, elderly merchant, Cornelis Sandvoort, his beautiful but frustrated young wife Sophia and the painter who enters their life, Jan van Loos. Commissioned to paint the happy couple's portrait, Jan becomes embroiled in a series of emotional and financial speculations which are to change the character's lives forever. The story about Sophia and Jan is most appealing. The author understands to illustrate Sophias life with words very well. The particular way in that the story is told, gives the reader a good chance to see the world with Sophias eyes. The reader understands what it was to live as a woman in this period and why Sophia betrayed her husband. Sophia, her maid, and Jan start a most vague plot to free Sohia from her marriage. It is the tragic of live that will intervene their future. I recommend this book to those who like peoples stories in historic times.

A great morality play

This story is full of interesting facts about the beginning of the mercantile age. It is also a story about human greed and lust and the way such sins are our downfall. It makes a nice companion to Girl with a pearl earing.

Set in sixteenth-century Amsterdam, Cornelis Sandvoort hires a painter to portray him and his wife Sophia. But Jan van Loos, the painter, and Sophia start an affair, causing trouble. I liked how this had fast chapters, and I liked the Netherlands, but I found the novel not quite interesting enough. What can I say? I'm young and easily distracted! :-) (C)

I wanted to read this book because I've just moved to Holland and wanted to get insight into tulips, painters, Amsterdam, etc. Moggach has done a lot of research to weave in 17th century Amsterdam, how people lived, the different professions of the day, as well as insight into tulipmania. The tulip auctions were the beginning of futures trading. And markets are fueled by greed and fear. This story has a lot of twists and turns. To appreciate it, one must see it from the perspectives of different characters - which Moggach uses to title each chapter.
