"This is first and foremost a scholarly work that targets the use of transmedia storytelling in higher education. The book delivers on that commitment, and provides much in the way of theory and concept to ignite the reader's thinking around the topic. The author provides a compelling argument that addresses the 'why to' of transmedia storytelling in higher education, and a limited amount of guidance regarding the 'how to.'" - Learning Solutions Magazine "Kalogeras' Transmedia Storytelling and the New Era of Media Convergence in Higher Education is a groundbreaking work that builds on extensive research including Henry Jenkins' research and that of many others, to explore how convergence cultures, media, storytelling and education are and will continue to creatively cross paths!" - Andrew Horton, The Jeanne H. Smith Professor of Film and Media Studies, The University of Oklahoma, USA "Kalogeras offers us a rich, subtle, profound account of how storytelling should take its place in the worlds of communication and education. Her techniques, which blend storytelling and the use of narratives in education, make this book an indispensable reading for educators to engage their students in the learning process." - Kathleen K. Orr, Chair of the Masters of Humanities Program, Tiffin University, USA "Like few other times in human history, significant innovation in our global system of education is pivotal to maintaining a quality of life. In Transmedia Storytelling and the New Era of Media Convergence in Higher Education, Stavroula Kalogeras shines a light on the untrodden path to enlightenment in the form of the vital role technology and multiple media platforms must play in the classroom. Supported by some of the leading minds in the field, Kalogeras demonstrates how a technique familiar to entertainment marketers and the advertising industry can be applied to education on a number of levels, yielding tremendous impact, and even reform. My prediction is that this book will be viewed as prescient and remarkably accurate in the very near future." - Jeff Gomez, CEO, Starlight Runner Entertainment " insightful and in depth perspective of how quickly digital multimedia technology is transforming as it relates and impacts the pedagogy way we learn and perceive ourselves and the world around us. Change is inevitable and it is fascinating to learn through this book about the factors that influence this process." - Pam Ritchie, Entertainment Consultant "Kalogeras opens up new pathways in teaching in higher education with transmedia storytelling - it is an approach to be reckoned with and taken seriously by educators who are concerned with transformative learning." - Gina K. Kostoulias, Program Coordinator for Professional Communication DEREE, The American College of Greece

Exploring the Practice of Transmedia Storytelling in Education 27. Juli 2014
Von Peggy Zoulas - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
Dr. Stavroula Kalogeras is the pioneer of transmedia education! The author shows us how media convergence is a paradigm for understanding educational convergence. Educational convergence is revolutionizing the educational structure and will in all likelihood emulate the evolution of media convergence. The sociocultural logic of media convergence is also impacting the creation of stories, which can be user-generated, collaborative, minority-drive, and fandom-oriented.
This is a well-written, compelling and timely addition of advice for those interested in adapting transmedia storytelling in education. Far from being a dry examination of transmedia theory and practice this book is the first of its kind that deals with transmedia storytelling edutainment (TmSE) in both online and offline learning environments.
The manuscript argues that emotional engagement, the thing that Hollywood does best, is what academia needs to adapt in order to engage learners. Rather than being a textbook based solely on theory, it is the author's personal passion and journey set forth to discover what education lacks, and it is supported by theory, practice and years of professional experience in both the entertainment industry and the institution of academia. More importantly, there is actionable insight here.
This book is a must read if you're interested in learning creative and transformative approaches to teaching/learning. The author offers sound advice based on first-hand experience in entertainment and education. Innovative and inspiring, the manuscript deals with educating the media generation of learners and not only. I agree with the author that education has failed us in many ways, and we need to take notice and establish reform.
Hollywood and Academia take notice! This is the book that will show you the way to increase revenue and retention by engaging a new generation of learners! Whether you are looking to increase revenues (due to or because of the Internet), develop a new pedagogic strategy around transmedia storytelling which increases student retention, or learn how to use a screenplay to replace a textbook, it is all right here. The screenplay (called a screentext) which is part of this transmedia project (found on the Palgrave website at: makes for a superb read and even a Hollywood production! And the Oscar/Apple goes to... The Goddess Within.
The author provides us with scholarly, creative and historical text and context that intertwines into an impactful and insightful piece of work. The book is compassionate, compelling and an innovative look at the future of education. Very valuable insights and a good read well worth it! Thumbs up for Transmedia Storytelling in the New Era of Media Convergence!!
A great read for students and teachers alike! 20. August 2014

Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Dr. Kalogeras delves deep into the ideal of transmedia as a convergent entity with a lens on its place in higher education. Audiences are introduced to what transmedia storytelling is as a tool of learning and teaching, not just as a form of expression where new media is concerned. Where I think Dr. Kalogeras really drives home the idea and [point] of transmedia storytelling as an integral part of the future of "convergence" rests in her specification of "edutainment" and how its role is to not only educate and entertain the students, but also teachers and their varying methodologies and forms of pedagogy. I think this book is a wonderful expression of that belief from beginning to end, educating audiences on the future of education, specifically higher education and the role of media convergence in its [education] ever-changing landscape.
