Synopsis
Mma Ramotswe is widely known for many things; for example, everybody knows about her kindness and her taste for redbush tea and cake -- she is after all traditionally built. Everybody is familiar, too, with her tiny white van, which is beginning to feel its age. Are its difficulties to be terminal, or will Charlie, the feckless garage apprentice, be able to save the day? Mma Makutsi certainly thinks the van's days are numbered, but she can do little to help, as she is experiencing a crisis in her engagement to Phuti Radiphuti. A scheming woman ? the pernicious Violet Sephotho ? has obtained a job at Phuti's store, clearly intending to prise him away from Mma Makutsi. And Charlie has to deal with a young lady with a baby who she claims is his responsibility. Is all this enough to unsettle Mma Ramotswe? Certainly not! Calm reflection, and frequent cups of tea, will be enough to solve even the most trying of problems ...

Having reached no. 10 of his "First Women'Äs DSetective Agency" series, this series by Alexander M Smith is beginning to sound like they were written by a random word generator. Yes, am extremely sophisticated word generator, but still, the language has become so repetitive to have a slightly cloying effect, Perhaps the best way to describe these books would be to compare them to potato chips: tasty, bit stuffing (not to mention addictive). I do wish Mr Schmith would let bush tea-drinking Mma Ramotswe and her fine, upstanding husband Mr J.L.B. Matekoni go on about their simple and fulfilling lives and instead turn his considerable talents as a storyteller and student of human nature to other, fresher fields of endeavor.

Der Anfang dieses 10. Bandes gestaltet sich etwas holprig, so dass ich schon glaubte, dass hier nicht mehr der gewohnte Wohlfühleffekt vorliegen würde, aber nach ein paar Kapiteln ist alles wieder so, wie man es erwartet hat. Die neuen Abenteuer der Mma Ramotswe und ihren Freunden sind wieder voll von Menschlichkeit und Wärme. Ich habe es gern gelesen, aber kann nicht ganz 5 Sterne verteilen, eher 4.5.

Only in the No. Ladies' Detective Agency series would it seem normal for shoes to be talking to their owner and someone else to notice while the owner does not. This is a fine example of how Alexander McCall Smith successful extends the bounds of reality to show how we are connected to one another and to the things around us. I particularly commend the imaginary conversations that Mma Ramotswe's van has with her.
As the book opens, Mma Ramotswe's white van is starting to make new noises. She fears that Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni will tell her that it's time to replace the van. To avoid such an awful result, Precious walks to work. The problems begin when she walks home.
The detective agency has a promising new client, Mr. Luengo Molofololo, owner of the Kalahari Swoopers, the local football (soccer) team. He owns a big house, drives a huge Mercedes-Benz, and knows everyone. Unfortunately, he seems to think that women know only about cooking. Precious knows precious little about soccer and wonders how she can help. He's convinced there is a traitor who is throwing the games, but he cannot identify who it is. Soon Precious joins Mr. Molofololo and her foster son, Puso, at one of the games.
Meanwhile, Mr. Phuti Radi-phuti has hired Violet Sephotho to sell beds at the Double Comfort Furniture Shop. Mma Makutsi is wary due her past run-ins with Violet . . . but fears sharing her concerns with her fiancé. Matters look dire when she sees him driving Violet home from work on the first day.... Precious Ramotswe und Grace Makutsi, Inhaberinnen der in Botswana wohlbekannten No 1 Ladies Detective Agency", bekommen es mit einem scheinbar sehr schwierigen Fall zu tun: Der verzweifelte Besitzer einer Fußballmannschaft bittet die Dektivinnen herauszufinden, warum seine Mannschaft seit einiger Zeit jedes Spiel verliert. Er ist überzeugt, es muss einen Betrüger unter den Spielern geben. Ohne die geringste Ahnung von Fußball, dafür mit einer Menge weiblicher Intuition ausgestattet, machen sich die beiden afrikanischen Ladies daran, diesen kniffligen Fall zu lösen und erleben dabei nebenher so manches zwischenmenschliche Abenteuer.
Eine makellos erzählte, geistreiche und humorige Geschichte, angenehm zu lesen und sehr unterhaltsam. Der Autor versteht es, seine Ideen kreativ umzusetzen und ist ein passabler Menschenkenner, wobei er althergebrachte Geschlechterklischees etwas zu eifrig und mit geradezu naiver Selbstverständlichkeit bedient.
Wegen der leichten Lesbarkeit dieser wenig anspruchsvollen Geschichte ist dieses Buch ein optimales Englisch-Training.
