So good. 4. Dezember 2012
Von Ramblings From This Chick Blog - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I don't even know where to begin with this book. First I will say that prior to reading Touch of Steel, I had not read anything in the Steampunk genre before. Secondly, why haven't I? Yeah, I loved this book. For real. I love the mix of modern with historical. Kate Cross created a world that felt real to me. Not only did she create this wonderful fantastical world, but she created a group of characters that I was really taken with and I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen with everyone.

Claire Brooks is a spy on a mission. She is out to kill the man that she feels is responsible for the death of her beloved brother Robert. She almost succeeds when she is injured and then captured by the Wardens, a rival spy group. When she makes a deal with the Wardens that she will give up any secrets of the Company's (the spy group she works for) in exchange for her release to enact vengeance on her brother, she is in turn placed into the custody of Alistair Payne one of the Wardens top spies.

Alistair wants nothing to do with Claire Brooks. There is something about her he doesn't trust. He knows she is hiding something and he's bound to find out what it is. Yet, he made a promise that he would escort her to find the man responsible not only for the death of her brother, but the man responsible for his best friend Lucas's memory loss. Even though Alistair and Claire dislike each other immensely both can't help but find the other attractive. Though beyond a small kiss, neither acts on the growing attraction.

Slowly but surely the farther along in their travels they get the harder they are finding it to resist one another. Both find that they really can't trust the other, especially in the case of Alistair with Claire. Alistair has been burned and deceived by women in his past so it's even harder for him to let Claire in. Yet, even though he can't really trust her he is quickly realizing that he just might not care.

As for Claire she's realizing the more time she spends with Alistair the more she is growing to like and appreciate him. In a different world he would be the man she would want to marry but here and now, with her future looking all but non existent, she knows that she must keep focused on her mission, you take down the man who killed her brother.

I can't say how much I enjoyed this book. The action, adventure, the romance, it was all so very good. Kate Cross crafted a winner with Touch of Steel and I very much it enjoyed it. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in her Clockwork Agents series. If it's half as good as Touch of Steel was I know I'm in for a treat.

Touch of Steel, Clockwork Agents #2, by Kate Cross
Grade: A

"You try to be so hard and tough, but beneath that you are a good man, and no woman can resist that. I don't care how well-trained or determined she is. You will make her want to please you, to win your trust and the ultimate prize of your heart, and then she's lost."

Claire Brooks has been a spy for The Company, an American spy agency, since she was fifteen years old and joined with her brother Robert. Claire, aka The Dove, has betrayed her agency and is out for revenge on the man who killed Robert in a fire. On the hunt Claire is shot and ends up in The Warden's, the British spy agency, custody where she is shocked to be shown kindness and a chance to get her revenge by switching sides. Claire will do anything to avenge her brother's death and agrees to accompany Alastair Payne to capture the men involved.

Alastair Payne, Earl of Wolfred, always knew he would be a Warden just like his mother and father were but he never expected to be double crossed by her former mistress and left for dead. Now more robot than man Alastair is determined to show everyone that he is a good spy and won't let a woman get the best of him again. Until he meets Claire Brooks. Claire is not to be trusted but the more time together Alastair sees deeper into her soul and why she needs revenge. The love affair could ruin them both or cost them their lives but they both know it can only end in heartache.

Touch of Steel is hands down the best steampunk-romance book that I have read in 2012 and maybe ever. The world Kate Cross has created is amazingly complex with spies, double crossings and everyone out to save their way of life. Nothing is this world is perfect and both Claire and Alastair have their share of tragedies and hardships that make them the driven people they are. The blend of the Victorian Age with the autotrons, and wonderful gadgets that Arden comes up with make this a world that I never want to leave.

We meet Alastair in the first book Heart of Brass and he comes full circle in Touch of Steel and I liked him so much better this time around. Alastair wants nothing to do with Claire but he knows how valuable she is at bringing down important people in the company. The more time he spends with her he learns what we readers already know: she's an amazing woman who fights for what she loves and will do anything for the people close to her. He can't help falling for her and the adventure they go on is an amazing ride of twists, turns and some very steamy scenes.

Claire is one of my new favorite heroines and she is a badass. She hangs with the boys, is an amazing spy and has a fan made with knives. I want to be her when I grow up so badly. Claire is on a mission and nothing will stop her from reaching her goal except her feelings that develop for Alastair. There is a huge plot twist towards the end of the book and it throws Claire's world upside down.

I can't say much more without giving too much away but this book is mind blowing. If you love steampunk as much as I do you must read this series that is only getting better. I can't wait for the next book because these are now at the top of my Must Read Pile.

Review: Touch Of Steel by Kate Cross 6. Dezember 2012
Von Tori @SmexyBooks - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Claire Brooks is on a mission of revenge. A deadly agent for The Company, Claire is determined to find the reasons her brother was killed, even if that means getting into bed with the Wardens of the Realm. When she is taken prisoner by the Wardens after being shot by a fellow agent, Claire agrees to help bring down The Company and accept whatever punishment the Wardens deem fit if they help her capture the rogue agent who her murdered her brother.

Alistair Payne, Lord Wolford, an agent for the Wardens, is still recovering both mentally and physically after his lover betrayed him and left him for dead. Struggling with past issues involving betrayal. Alistair agrees to partner up with Claire; he will help her capture the rogue agent while keeping a tight grip on her leash.

When Claire and Alistair go undercover as an affianced couple, both Claire and Alistair find it hard to discount the growing feelings between them. As they get closer to the capture of their target, each must decide what's more important...their loyalties or their hearts?

Touch Of Steel, the second in Ms. Cross's dark and intriguing Clockwork Agents series, submerges us back into the wonderful world of Victorian sediments and steampunk adventures. Riveting action, wicked spies, steamy romance, and an all-star cast keep us on our toes. Lush world building continues to evolve as we divulge deeper into the mechanics behind the Wardens of the Realm and their arch enemies, The Company. The Wardens are a secret government group who work behind the scenes to protect the monarchy and it's hierarchy, while The Company seeks to destroy it. One important aspect to remember is each group feels it is doing what is best for England and its residents and each will stop at nothing to achieve their objectives.

Our story begins with the capture of Claire Brooks, code name the Dove, by the Wardens. A very dangerous woman, Claire is considered a huge catch for the Wardens. When she comes to, she immediately asks for Lucas Grey. Lucas was the hero in Heart Of Brass and a former agent for the Wardens and The Company. Lucas, whose mind was tampered with by The Company, lost seven years of his life and Claire knows that if anyone will help her with her revenge against The Company, it will be him. However, Lucas is no longer an agent and due to his family situation, Alistair steps in to once again to protect his friend from harm.

Alistair is prepared to hate Claire as an enemy of the Wardens but finds himself reluctantly drawn to the strong, independent woman. She makes no pleas or excuses for her actions. Like him, she believed in her employer and their ideals...until they took from her the only person in the world she loved. With a beauty and boldness that appeals to him, Alistair finds himself liking and admiring her while, at the sometime, disgusted with her for betraying her employers. He already doesn't trust his judgment when it comes to women and he can't help but feel that Claire's endgame is far more insidious than anyone realizes.

Both Claire and Alistair are delightful protagonists who you instantly connect with. Writing in the 3rd person allows us an intimate view into both their psyches. Claire's commitment to the Company is explained in that she has been with them since she was fifteen years old. As her only family, their betrayal was doubly hard for her. Alistair also grew up amongst spies and both his parents were Wardens. Both have suffered at the hands of deception, which is both a hinder and connection for them in their relationship. Their interactions with one another are sensual and amusing. Witty dry dialogue and little digs will have you smiling as their two square off against each other. Strong chemistry keeps their romance steamy even as it unfolds slowly.

A well developed and personable secondary cast with individual storylines that intersect and spike your curiosity. Dr. Eva Stone once again shows her remarkable compassion in her befriending of Claire and we see a tiny clue of her back story involving another Warden that I'm anxious to read about. Ms. Cross allows us time with Lucas and Arden; letting us see how their relationship is progressing. We met other Wardens and various members of the Company. What I enjoy about this series is that everyone has hidden agendas; making for a more exciting story filled with many twists and turns. As stated earlier, the Wardens and The Company want what's best for their country. There are good and bad agents on both sides of the playing field. Viable characters and intriguing conflicts keeps the story moving along and also continues to give more insight into our characters and their places in this secret world.

If you enjoy strong protagonists, witty dialog, steamy romance, and exciting steampunk adventures, then I wholeheartedly recommend Kate Cross's Clockwork Agent series.

Secret agent shenanigans, FTW! 18. Februar 2013

As soon as I finished this book, I went out and got the first one that I missed. A highly enjoyable series filled with plenty of secret agent-y shenanigans, the second book the Clockwork Agents series didn't disappoint. While steampunk can be rather hit-or-miss with me, this one worked because of the characters, the whip-smart dialogue and the fantastic tension between the characters. Super-spy Claire's hell-bent on vengeance against the man who she believes murdered her brother when she's injured and caught by her rivals. Untrusting of women (poor boy, he's been burned badly), Alistair and rival spy must team up with Claire to find a rogue agent. There's plenty of tension and bad-assery (you know I like that!) on both sides until they finally learn to function together and, of course, fall in love (hey, it is a romance, after all). A great twist near the end kept me flipping the pages.
