Brad is great at meeting other people’s expectations. But his own? Not so much. Take the gay thing. Okay, so yeah. It took a morning meeting with a frat brother’s hairy, naked ass for him to admit it, but he knows the truth about himself now. Let the gay life commence.

Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. He hasn’t quite determined how to come out to anyone, even Sebastian, the geeky-hot TA in his history class. Sebastian is everything Brad is not. Intellectual, suave, hairy. Out. And he doesn’t seem interested in Brad, even when Brad makes a fool of himself trying to catch his notice.

Score one for foolery: Sebastian does more than notice Brad; he takes him to bed. Brad’s been with plenty of girls, but with Sebastian, the sex is something else entirely—hot, mind-blowing, affirming, and a little domineering in a way that drives him wild. But when great sex turns into something more—dare he admit the “L” word?—Brad must face the crushing realization that Sebastian doesn’t feel the same. Unless, of course, he does. After all, even grad students can be idiots about matters of the heart.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Sweet and Sexy With Wonderful Moments of Humor 29. März 2012
Von J. Faltys - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
It takes a very talented writer to perfectly balance humor, sexiness, and sweetness all in one story but Anne Tenino does so nicely in her latest release Frat Boy and Toppy. As a reader who doesn't normally enjoy rom-com stories, Ms. Tenino totally won me over and I found myself complete drawn into the lives of these collegians and their teachers.

Brad has always tried to live up to the image of a playboy athlete since he doesn't want to disappointment those around him, but as he gets older he can't keep fighting his true desires any longer. Enter sexy and self-confident TA Sebastian who Brad can't keep his eyes off of and who becomes the catalyst for a major revelation and a new chapter in his life. Brad's extremely sweet with a nice bit of snarky thrown in to bring some wonderful humor to the story. He's struggled and been miserable for so long keeping up his facade and you could see how it weighed on him. He hated himself for using women and alcohol to ignore his real inclinations. As he started accepting the truth of himself and slowly let others know you could sense that weight lifting off him. He became even more light-hearted and more self-confident. Brad seemed so much younger at the start of his relationship with Sebastian but things felt more equal between them later on after he came out. He became a man at that point, not so obsessed over other's opinions.

Sebastian was a complicated character that had been hurt by love before and shied away from it now. He was sexy and caring and was the perfect person to be Brad's first since he understood the seriousness of what their being together would mean for Brad's life. But whereas I could see the evolution of Brad emotionally, I can't quite say the same for Sebastian. I never felt like we learned as much about Sebastian's life to fully become as connected to him. This story was definitely about Brad which left Sebastian on the back burner a bit.

To help Brad get through this most important time in his life, he was lucky to have a wonderful group of people around him. From his extremely supportive family (who frustrated him by their complete and easy acceptance of him) to his best friend Kyle (who had many humorous reactions to Brad's coming out) to his new roommate Collin (who's struggling with his own coming out), Brad couldn't have been luckier and it's a shame that in real life this large of a support group isn't always the case. These secondary characters were wonderful and lit up the page and I would especially love to see more of Collin as he deserves a happy ending of his own.

This was an engaging read with a deep depth of emotion liberally sprinkled with humor. From the witty dialogue to the smoldering sex scenes I was completely drawn in and hated to see it come to an end. This was my first time reading a book of Ms. Tenino's but it definitely won't be the last.

5.0 von 5 Sternen No doubt, it's a 5 stars book 28. März 2012

Brad is trying to be the best... the best son, the best football player, but... it's not enough. He is trying too hard, and achieving just partial success. Why? He can't find himself, in the mess of his life. College is not easy to anyone, much less to a popular football player that is in the closet.

Sebastian is a geek TA in Brad's history class. Everyone know he is gay... Brad know it too... and it desperate in love with him.
Brad want to fall in love, and be in love. Sebastian don't... can they be a perfect couple in such different worlds? A professor assistance can (better say, want) deal with a in closet popular player?
Can Brad and Sebastian be a couple? Read to know... yeah I'm a teaser :D

***************IMO why this book deserve 5 stars******************

1) the humor. No, it's not a book that will make you smile... it will crack you up loud. Oh no kidding... I laugh so many times my husband was really worried I was taking more than just painkiller drugs :D It's funny guys and girls, and I'm not kidding! Brad and Sebastian will be the narrator and I must admit the funniest was Brad. He is young, confused and his voice is perfect! A young, confused and in love brat, that crack me up. And BTW by brat I don't want to say he is immature, he is just... so innocent and willing to learn! He want to be gay, he want a boyfriend, but he have no idea how to be/get it... so, yes it's hilarious follow Brad in his thoughts and behave.

2) the erotic content. Ok, let get straight to the point, there is a lot of gay sex in this book. Oh yes, and no, I'm not spoiling saying if Brad will have with Sebastian or not... because Sebastian is not the only gay in the campus... oh yes, always teaser :D BUT don't think Brad is a slut or anything like that... he is... in a hormone storm :D He need, and he will have, sex. So oh yesss, there is a lot of sex scenes.

3) the supportive characters are wonderful. I love all... all of them. It's just a pity both families are not well explored in the story. Brad and Sebastian family add a lot to this book, and well, also Brad fraternity friends and his ex girlfriend. All of them.. I love ALL!

4) I couldn't put it down. After I start it I was... lost to the world :D It's a perfect book, to relax you, and take your mind from your worries. It work for me perfectly, so THIS is the main reason this book is getting 5 stars.

So yes, it's a 5 stars book and that is a list of my reasons. Read it, to be charmed by Sebastian geekness (yeah, I know it's not a word :D but well, he is SUUUUUCH a geek sometimes... and I love him) and be in love with Brad charisma.

Because maybe it's a very complicated world, but why make it worst, fighting against who we are?

On the Goodreads book page of this novel under the cover picture there's a button that says "read ebook." It gives you the option of reading the first six chapters of Frat Boy and Toppy for free.

I call that false advertising.

I didn't even read the synopsis, I just jumped in, read the free preview, and laughed until my jaws ached. Naturally I had to get my hands on the rest of the story and when I did-I was sorely disappointed.

Yes, I fell in love with the easy going Brad and emotionally repressed Sebastian and I laughed at their mental commentary. This was one of the few times humour did translate well. Even the unbelievably positive reactions to Brad's coming out to his family and friends, didn't bother the cynic in me who looks to realism. I was charmed by this modern fairytale telling it's okay to be who you are, it's okay to be gay and no one should tell you otherwise. I didn't even miss a more intricate plot, because simple character based stories are lovely too.

What did bother me and what dropped this from a solid four star rating to three was the fact that the plot introduced in the free snippet dissipated into gratuitous erotica. The middle third of this book is nothing but sex. And when I say sex, I mean imaginative sex. Brad mindlessly wanders from one encounter to another and very little happens in between. The remaining plot threads, which could be called mere character development, are brought back for the last fifth of the book. That's when the humour returned and I started enjoying the book again.

There were few elements, romance tropes I should say, that either made gentle kind of mockery of every hetero romance where an inexperienced young woman is seduced by an older man or made me think-fleetingly-whether or not this had been a het couple rewritten to be an M/M romance. Then I'd remember Brad's jock-who-loves-to-cook characterisation and definite masculine voice and scoff at myself.

When will the M/M authors understand that it's the story I want?

Frat Boy and Toppy by Anne Tenino
Source: Netgalley
3/5 stars

**NOTE: 18 and over only**

I am not ashamed to say that from time to time I like to take a little skinny dip in the old erotica pool. I suited up over the weekend and dove right in to Anne Tenino¡s Frat Boy and Toppy only to come out of the pool feeling quite unsatisfied. I¡m done with and over the swimming metaphor now . . . .

What I liked:

*Brad: the lead character who is a frat boy jock who has finally admitted to himself he is not only gay but completely smitten with his history T.A., Sebastian. Brad¡s confusion and vulnerability are endearing and his reactions to certain situations are just funny. For example, when he comes out to his family . . . I laughed. Brad as a character is hard to dislike and I wouldn¡t have minded at all knowing more about him.

*Sebastian: the openly gay history T.A. who is disturbingly smitten with Brad. I like Sebastian¡s confidence in who he is; he is a hot braniac who makes no apologies for who he is and how he lives his life. His confidence and swagger are only shaken when he figures out Brad may be more than a mere booty call.

*The sex: Although I can¡t say I am any expert by any means on gay sex I am fairly open minded and thought Brad and Sebastian did a fine (if somewhat messy) job of steaming up the pages. Once Brad acknowledges being gay and makes Sebastian aware of his interest there is just no stopping those two! I won¡t lie; I might have learned a thing or two º

What I didn¡t like:

*The plot: There aren¡t any glaring holes in the plot or crazy inconsistences but that is likely because there isn¡t much of a plot to speak of. Yes, there is the whole Brad coming out to everyone and dealing with his new relationship highs and lows with Sebastian but these elements aren¡t really dealt with until near the end of the novel. Quite frankly, it¡s just a case of too little too late.

*The sex: What??? How can this be both a like and a dislike you ask? Quite simply, you can indeed have far too much of a good thing. There is an incredible amount of sex in this book to the point of it bordering on way too much; the amount of naughty verses the amount of plot just don¡t balance one another.

Bottom line: I like the characters just fine but would have liked to have seen their story go a bit further; Sebastian and Brad are both nice guys that must have something more to them then just hot bodies. The sex is great but it does become a bit tired after so many scenes. (I can NOT believe I just said that, BTW) I have read enough erotica to know that you can have all the fantastic naughty bits and a strong plot and I truly wish that had happened with this book. If you are looking for an easy, naughty read then this is the book for you BUT, if you need more substance in your erotica I would have to recommend steering clear of this read.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Lots of Sex, Light on Story 7. Dezember 2012
Von Rocky Sunico - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I picked up a review copy of this book through NetGalley to see what their queer fiction would be like. and this book was, well, rather shallow but fun in its own right, I suppose.

At the end of the day it felt like a lot of different interent porn stories mashed into a book. I mean seriously, for such a short book, there was a LOT of sex, and at least it wasn't totally bad erotica (but there are better out there) Could have used a heck of a lot more character development, since the characters felt very hollow except at the very beginning and then at the very end. All we know is that they have a lot of sex and somehow that leads to them being in love at the end.

And Sebastian has a thing for punctuating his sentences with "yeah".
