17. September 2002

In this young adult autobiography, Tony Hawk shares the stories from his life that have helped him become a skateboarding hero.

Hawk speaks of being a super-competitive ′demon′ child who found peace while on a skateboard. Classmates teased him because of his interest in an ′uncool′ sport. Instead of retaliating with violence, he practised even more. With his story, he will inspire a younger generation of fans to stand up for what they believe in and follow their dreams.

Ages 8-12

1.0 von 5 Sternen Bleibt weit hinter den Erwartungen zurück 7. Januar 2013
Von Dr. Who
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf

:) 8. August 2012

There are very few books which make me laugh out loud while reading. And this is one of them.

There is nothing one can NOT like about this book:
- it's basically a very raw form of an autobiography (you could also say it's a collection of experiences, but to me that doesn't seems to be too far apart from a loose form of autobiography)
- it's a 100% honest. His experiences, feelings and ups and downs are described so lively that sometimes it made me feel as if I relived these moments.
- it's one of the few books where the author doesn't use too many words. Tony tells things as they were and that's it.
- the chapters are short and distinctive
- the language is fluent, sometimes a bit colloquial English. Not only does it give the book more authenticity but it also makes it an easy read for a learner of the English language (certainly not what Tony had in mind when he wrote the book, nevertheless a plus)
- there is so much irony in it: He tells the adventures of a teenager from the perspective of an adult. Little comments let the reader know that Tony does it with a little smirk on his face. It's this "Man, that was kinda weird, but it was fun anyway!" kinda attitude.
- the layout is interesting: lots of printed backgrounds under the writing and -of course- lots and lots of photos. Don't get me wrong: these photos don't simply fill the book, they show moments which are hard to put into words: his hanging in mid air between to huge halfpipes while crossing the big gap. Or little Tony with huge protection gear. ;)

Oh well, I could write forever here. Instead, I'll leave it at that: I love the book and take it up for a short read every now and again. A fantastic read for skaters; and for non-skaters as well. Simple verdict: 5 stars.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Moms get this for your kids! 24. September 2002
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf
My oldest son is 15 years old, and he loves Tony's books Occupation Skateboarder. The problem was that my 8 year old wanted to read the book too, but it was too hard for her. Thankfully, Tony came out with Tony Hawkk Professional Skateboarder which is an easier to read version. She read it all by herself one Saturday---I can never get her to read! When she was done my 15 years old read it--there were new photos and stories, he was so happy. Thanks, Tony, for getting my kids to read.

There is nothing in this book that is improper for children. This is a book specifically designed for young readers with no foul language and nothing indecent. Tony is a very moral and respectable person and a great role model for children.

5.0 von 5 Sternen "Tony Hawk : Professional Skateboarder" A Skater's Point of View 28. November 2005
Kinder-Rezension - Veröffentlicht auf
Tony Hawk: Professional Skateboarder was a great autobiography. Tony Hawk is the main person. He talks about his life from when he was a baby through his adult hood with ups and downs of his skateboarding career.

Tony Hawk wouldn't be a successful pro skateboarder if it weren't for his brother. He introduced Tony to skating at age 9. Once Tony was really into skateboarding, he became pro. In the summer of 1999 Tony Hawk landed the 900.He was the fist person to ever land that. You have to spin fully around 2 times. Tony made history in skateboarding. He is a great role model and gives skateboarding a good name.

I thought this book was great and if you are smart about skateboarding history, you will connect to a lot of things in this novel. This book is for all ages. I enjoyed it, and if you like skateboarding, you will like it too. If you don't like skateboarding, you might learn stuff about skating. Also, you might get interested in skateboarding. Now enough about the book review, read Tony Hawk: Professional Skateboarder.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Tony Hawk Professional Skateboarder - Great Book 27. Februar 2007
Kinder-Rezension - Veröffentlicht auf
I like the book because when I read it it helped me land new tricks. I learned a lot about Tony Hawk. He would never give up and he would always try to land tricks no matter what. He wanted to get better and that told me that it doesn't matter how much pain you are in when you land it. It is all worth it because now you have a new trick. He also did not let what other people thought influence him. He wanted to be a skateboarder when it was not cool, but he did not care. He knew what he liked to do and did it.

After I read the book, I was all pumped up. Whenever I would go to the gap I would always try to land this trick that I couldn't do and then after I read the book I said to myself it is worth it no matter how bad I fell just get up unless you break something, and after I said that then I went for it and did my all, and I landed the trick on my third try and from there on I have been landing all of my tricks and become a better skateboarder.

I think that every skateboarder should read this book because it will inspire them a lot like it has inspired me. Before I read this book I thought that Tony Hawk was just a pro skateboarder and I thought that he wasn't that good. When I read this book that my friend recommended, I said to him that I didn't like Tony Hawk that much, and he said just read it. So I went to the libary and checked it out. Then, I got into it. I found out that he wasn't a poser or a loser that he all he wanted to do was get kid skateboarders into it and to teach them and help them out with their skating. Because of all his success, he is able to do a lot to help kids all over the world. He is a cool guy and this is a great book.
