3.0 von 5 Sternen The Most Basic of Basic Stuff is Here in a Very Bloated Guide 6. März 2013
Von S. Rhodes - Veröffentlicht auf
As video games have gotten to be more complex and provide more in content, the strategy guides can't seem to always keep up. Bradygames has, over the years, been a mixed bag. Whenever I see a guide from them they're usually thick and seem to be ripe with information... until you actually start sitting down to use it. There's a lot of stuff here, sure, but Bradygames simply refuses to go the extra mile when it definitely should. The Tomb Raider Guide is going to help you get through the game, but it will not go much beyond that. For those hoping to come out as Tomb Raider experts, this strategy guide will only get you started.

The guide begins with an introduction. It isn't really necessary. If the forward were from the developers I might've been interested, but rather the introduction is by the authors themselves. But the only thing the introduction tells you is, "We're here to guide you." Apparently being a strategy guide wasn't enough to tell us this.

But that's just being nitpicky. Once we get into the actual guide we start seeing the strengths and weaknesses of Bradygames in real fashion. All the stuff before the walkthrough suffices to get players acquainted to the game. Tomb Raider doesn't have a demanding tutorial, but it's nice that Bradygames is willing to go over the basics again for players who may need them. The option is there. The survival guide and survival skills is actually quite in depth and straightforward in detailing everything you need to know about the games mechanics. The only real downside is that it doesn't really offer any tips on just how you might want to invest your skill points. It more or less tells you the skills, but never really offers any advice on which ones help or which ones you might want to consider first. The walkthrough won't do this either.

That's not to say the walkthrough is totally useless. The maps are very detailed, the objectives are in good order. Each time the game gives you a new objective, it has its own header in the guide and the section that'll take you through it. There is a waypoint system the guide uses, but not as effectively as other strategy guides. On the map you'll see wayponts. There is waypoint 1 in a red circle. Then 2 and 3 etc. There is no "1. Objective" in the guide, though. As you read through the text you might just stumble across one and realize it's talking about what to do at point 1. There are lots of symbols on the map to show you things like where tombs or where ammo is or other goodies like challenges and collectibles. Just because it calls out those things on the map, however, does not mean it will detail it in the walkthrough. It will... sometimes. For the most part you'll need to flip to the collectibles chapter just to find them all.

There is also a lot of coverage on the multiplayer. As of this writing I have not dived into Tomb Raider's multiplayer, but this section is nearly sixty pages and talks about quite a bit of it. It may be worth a look, but it may only cover the most basic of basic stuff.

There is then an achievements and trophies guide which list all the achievements and trophies. This is a good time to talk about how Bradygames just doesn't ever want to go the extra mile. It list the achievements and trophies and the requirement to get them (ripped directly from the achievement/trophy list) but it never gives strategies on how to get the tougher ones. Or suggestions. Trophies or achievements that could be difficult to get the guide pretty much sets you on your own. There is an extras chapter but, again, it's just a list nothing about how to actually achieve them.

The reason it seems like Bradygames should be going the extra mile is because their strategy guides are so unusually large. The Tomb Raider guide isn't bad but it's getting increasingly annoying to see Bradygames only provide the most basic of basic information. A walkthrough that'll get you through the game but if you're expecting advanced strategies they just won't be here. Likewise, for those wondering about gameplay differences between the difficulty settings... nope. Nothing. Want some tips on how to pass some moments on the "Hard" difficulty setting? You're on your own.

This strategy guide is 320 pages long but it manages to say so little despite having so much text. But the ONLY reason the guide is so huge seems to be because Bradygames insist on using enormous screenshots and maps to fill in a lot of space. The problem with all this is that it isn't always organized about it. The section breakdown of each objective is nice, but the guide isn't tailored to quick referencing if you need it. It's a silly complaint. Almost nitpicky. But in an era of fast paced games I'd rather use a guide as I go. Bradygames doesn't really make their guides for quick referencing. Being a thicker guide doesn't automatically make it a better guide. In this case the thickness only serves to show us how Bradygames likes to inflate the size of their guides so that it appears to be giving you more information than it is.

It's a helpful strategy guide in the long run. It gets you through the game but really doesn't provide a lot of depth for those looking to master Tomb Raider. Only for those hoping to get through it.

4.0 von 5 Sternen closer to a 3.5, but certainly worth having it at your disposal... 6. März 2013

there will always be the 'controversy' over game guides since most of us have access to the internet. i, for one, LOVE game guides! are they ever perfect? nope. are they helpful? i certainly think so.

i will get my beefs out early: there is no index at the back (why, bradygames?), and there is no listing (that i have been able to find) for the outfits lara possibly has access to. the former is a far bigger beef than the latter.

that being said, the contents are well listed out, and i found the guide to be visually engaging as well as interesting. i enjoyed getting a comprehensive one-glance look at the guns and upgrades, as well as lara's skill tree. there are so many great games out there now, it can be hard to know the nuances of each...this is another reason i love guides. just reading through the basics, i learned a few fun facts to help me progress a little faster (i.e.: you get more XP if you zoom in on the target).

yes, a considerable amount of the space is taken up with images, but honestly, for me, that's preferable. in other guides i have bought, the images have been so tiny, it was difficult to tell what i was looking at. i will take this format over the latter any day.

you will find the basics here: an introduction to the game, lara's moves, her skill tree, her gear and a fleshed out grid of the available upgrades, the cast of characters (good and bad), the collectibles, and of course, the walkthrough itself. there is also roughly a 60 page inclusion for multiplayer. the only area i was a little disappointed in was the 'achievements/trophies' section, as there were no page references to any specifics. not a huge deal, but it seems like for especially the few hidden trophies, page callouts could have been an easy inclusion.

all in all, i would recommend this guide. is it vital? absolutely not. did i enjoy using it? yes, indeedy.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Okay book, typical Brady 11. Juni 2013

The pictures are about useless, it is a hard game to play and look for the stuff anyway, but the pictures were unhelpful....didn't consult it much, and that isn't because I'm a great an easy way of knowing where the stuff is, if you want all of the awards etc. I've never found Brady books the best anyway, would always buy Prima if there ever was an alternative.

Besides the artwork being drop dead gorgeous, it's very easy to read and understand. Extremely helpful tips and a good tool to use if stuck. Lot of help for the hidden things to get those trophies or achievements.
