Kurzbeschreibung

Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Tom Waits has ridden his own trends for the better part of forty years, defying any and all notion of convention outside the context of his own sub-genre, and becoming one of the most unique voices music. ‘Tom Waits: In the Studio’ explores the creative processes behind the writing and recording of his amazing catalogue, via interviews with engineers and producers and quoted commentary from Waits' himself. An investigatory thread runs throughout, and the treasure trove of information and insight will prove a must for any fan of this most enigmatic and revered of craftsmen.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not even worth a Waitsian witticism 28. Februar 2012

I was probably one of the first people to pre-order this book, and like so many others I had such high hopes. When it came I had to put it aside because of some other reading, but it went straight to the top of my list. I am not only a listener, but also an artist myself, and I like knowing the back story to people's inspiration, and particularly studio stuff.

Sorry to say that I am only on the third chapter, and it doesn't look good. There are some insights, and interesting bits, but it is all spoiled by the incredibly poor writing and lack of even basic editing. Typos, run on sentences... it's amazing that a book dedicated to such a great wordsmith would even be *allowed* to get out like this. It seems to have been a rushed job. Maybe the author isn't to blame for everything, but in terms of content, so far I see nothing more than a collage of snippets from various reviews, strung to together as if by a computer.

Rolling Stone said...
In an interview with (fill in blank) Tom said...
In the documentary blah blah, Waits said blah blah...

That's normal for most books of this type. But when it happens constantly, often with little context and lots of rambling, it gets old fast. I would have preferred footnotes to what they did here. Sure, few of us want to spend the time to collect all those snippets and garner their wisdom, but the presentation here is horrible. Editorial insight should have been sought on how to present this better. Proofreaders should have been used.

I will try to finish this book, simply because I have a pet peeve about finishing what I start. It's a sad state of affairs when writing has reached such a low point, even in niche areas like this. I'm not even going to grace this review with a Waitsian witticism. As an avid reader, and student of rhetoric and media criticism, this was such a disappointment.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Don't buy this book! 27. Februar 2013

Stupidly, I thought this book might have some insight on some of Tom Waits' recording techniques. All it does is go through each album and sort of put together a collection of quotes from various interviews and some author conjecture. All the information in this book is available from just reading Waits' interviews. Buying this book was a complete waste of money.
