Star Trek's Mr. Sulu may be famous for fictional adventures out among the asteroids, but his own life, especially the early years, down on terra firma has been adventurous, too. To begin with, adventure stemmed from the accident of birth. The first child of a Japanese American mother and Japanese immigrant father denied U.S. citizenship because of the naturalization quotas then in force, Takei went with them into internment camps, first in Arkansas and then in California, during World War II. After the war, the family settled in East L.A., where George began school and a lifelong appreciation for Latino culture. Later, his father managed a crosstown move that put George into a mixed-race, up-and-coming, middle-class neighborhood, and his first adventure in political action occurred when teenage George found summer work picking strawberries and discovered the paymasters cheating Mexican pickers. Takei relates the incidents of these and his subsequent years establishing an acting career and continuing to express his social ideals (he even ran for the L.A. city council) in an anecdotal style that sounds as if he's honed it at many a Trekkers' convention. They're darn good stories and less predictable than his Star Trek memories, which tend to reinforce what Trekkers already know: for example, Bill Shatner is a tad egoistic, and Nichelle Nichols is pretty wonderful. Just finished reading George Takei's autobiography and enjoyed it immensely! George is a very talented & gifted writer who paints pictures with prose. He told very engaging stories about his family's triumphs & tribulations in America as well as his eventual rise to Sulu in the Star Trek juggernaut. His book provides a very honest & compelling view of his family's ordeal in the Japanese internment camps in the US during World War II. In spite of this awful abrogation of their constitutional rights by the US government, they still believed and never gave up on the American dream....simply amazing! The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is that his coverage of his days with Star Trek (both television series & movies) was a little thin. Given the colorful cast of characters within Star Trek as well as that dysfunctional bazaar called Hollywood, I have to believe there is more literary & comical gold to be mined from his life story.

The story starts with childhood experiences which are very interesting since he grew up in 2nd World War in the US. Furthermore, he writers about his way to get into acting and his first jobs and difficulties with his parents.
After 1/3 of the book the part about Star Trek starts. There are many insights of him working with other colleagues of which Walter Koenig seems to have been his best buddy and Shatner his worst.
Since not only Takei but Doohan and Nemoy as well as the producers (Solo and something) all complained about Shatner and his narcissism I found the book ruther believable. Do not get me wrong. I watch everything Shatner is in but as a person I would not have liked him either.

Dieses Buch handelt in erster Linie nicht von StarTrek, sondern von George Takei. Es ist dabei ein extrem lesenswertes Buch, weil auch Informationen über eine sehr verworrene Zeit der amerikanischen Geschichte gegeben werden und auch über die Möglichkeiten, die der Einzelne innerhalb eines demokratischen Systems hat.
Es ist ein nachdenkliches, aber auch witziges Buch, das von einem Mann mit viel Intelligenz und einer großen Liebe für seine Mitmenschen geschrieben wurde. Uneingeschränkt weiterzuempfehlen. (Sieben Sterne von mir)
