Amazon.de

Suspense builds in this novel about scientists, physics, time travel, and saving the Earth. It's 1998, and a physicist in Cambridge, England, attempts to send a message backward in time. Earth is falling apart, and a government faction supports the project in hopes of diverting or avoiding the environmental disasters beginning to tear at the edges of civilization. It's 1962, and a physicist in California struggles with his new life on the West Coast, office politics, and the irregularities of data that plague his experiments. The story's perspective toggles between time lines, physicists, and their communities. Timescape presents the subculture and world of scientists in microcosm: the lab, the loves, the grappling for grants, the pressures from university and government, the rewards and trials of relationships with spouses, the pressures of the scientific race, and the thrill of discovery.

Timescape merits the tag "hard science fiction"; it tells the story of scientists, and readers can't help but learn something about tachyons and physics while reading it. Yet much of the story is about humanity: the men John Renfrew and Gordon Bernstein and their relationships--between husband and wife, lover and lover, English working class and upper class, professor and student, and academician and colleagues.

Winner of the Nebula Award in 1980 and the John W. Clark Award in 1981, Timescape offers readers a great yarn, in terms of both humanity and science. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Taschenbuch .

Synopsis

The year is 1998, the world is a growing nightmare of desperation, of uncontrollable pollution and increasing social unrest. Scientists experiment with subatomic particles that travel faster than the speed of light and are able to signal to previous generations.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A possible future 26. Juni 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
I like this novel. Benford is very good with character and situation development. He weaves interesting and complex characters. He does make certain demands of his readers though, expecting us to fill in the gaps with our imagination, in order to understand some fairly complex decision-making. This style is not for everyone.

Briefly, the story tells of a dialogue between a possible future and its past; one direction of the communication is with a time-independent particle stream, the other direction with messages left in a safe-deposit box.

This is, I believe, one of Benford's earlier works, and has a rough-hewn quality to it, but the story is quite good, and portends of great things to come. I really feel his writing style reached a peak in "The Ocean of Night," and I view that as a better novel than this one. This book stands on its own as an exciting and well-written work. I won't give away the end, but you need to be on your toes to pick up on what's happening in both worlds - skimming is not allowed.

2.0 von 5 Sternen abysmal combination of attempted plot and hard science 9. November 1999
Format:Taschenbuch
I didn't care about the characters, they were all two dimensional and unlikable, and the science, while hard, was so inadequately explained or connected to the plot that it was surplusage. Despite the nebula award, don't waste your time or money.

2.0 von 5 Sternen THIS was worth a Nebula award?? 27. Januar 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
So Gregory Benford is a physicist himself. Great! I can appreciate a scientist dousing a sf story with mounds of science. But - hey - how much? He must have thought his characters needed - well - character. So he heaps day-to-day ennui upon ennui. Was he paid by the word? And for story? This is FICTION. Why not make it fictitious? Except for a really GOOD idea of a time traveling Morse coded message where was anything outside of ORDINARY? His details of his characters life becomes ponderous, while his details of what should have been interesting were scant. How about the "Central Park bomb"? (only one mention). The Kennedy fictionalized assassination went on for pages. Then it was followed by the vaguest hints of JFK's recovery and continued presidency. BIG DEAL!! 500 pages of waiting and wanting to understand why this thing won a Nebula.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good...But... 14. Oktober 1998
Von dsrussell
Format:Taschenbuch
Gregory Benford's 'Timescape' is a difficult book for me to review. I liked the idea of trying to communicate back into time to advert a present day ecological disaster. I also liked how Benford gave time to his characters (both present and past), making them real people and not cardboard characters (the problem with much of sci-fi). However, a problem cropped up while reading 'Timescape'. I found myself skim-reading far too frequently. I'm not sure just why, but it might be that Benford's descriptive text was far too laboring (at least it was for this reader).

I liked 'Timescape' and I'm sure many out there will enjoy it. After reading so much science fiction without real-life characters, this novel was refreshing, however, I can't really recommend it as a must read. Between 1 and 10, 'Timescape' gets a marginal 6.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Absorbing, intelligent, gripping time-travel novel 20. August 1997
Format:Taschenbuch
There are no weird aliens or laser blasters in Gregory Benford's brilliant work of science fiction. Instead, what we have here is a story of physicists at opposite ends of a time tunnel (reminiscent of the tunnel technology we use to secure Internet communications today). From this dry base, with these dull-sounding characters, Benford has created a story which is so absorbing that the reader is hard pressed to put it down all the way to the terrific ending. As the ultimate test, I lent the book to my wife (no science fiction reader) while we were on vacation. She would not put the book down until she had finished it

Ist recht spannend, jedoch zu sehr in die länge gezogen.
das ende ist nach auflösung der spannung schwach.
zeitverschiebung hält sich ganz gut an die wissenschaftlichen theoret. möglichkeiten.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Fascinating, but unsatisfying 5. Juni 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
The subject of the review says it all. It was not until I was completely finished with the book, and had reflected on it, that I reached the conclusion "fascinating bu unsatisfying." However, I am forced to give the book a 4/5 simply because it did make me reflect on it, something I rarely do with fiction. The characters were diverse, and I liked the fact they had personal lives outside the lab that were at least approaching realistic, and the science was interesting. Definitely a science fiction as opposed to a science fantasy story.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Where'd it go? 25. Januar 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
I saw this book in the library and the cover caught my eye. I read the back and thought, "What a great story line!" After plowing and plowing through the book I finally finished it. I don't know how it won any award.

The story line was great. So much could have been done with it. I got to the end of the book and thought........huh? I'm still guessing. The characters were developed enough to satisfy me, but there was so much excess information in this book, that it kept you jumping from here to there to keep up. He must know someone who knows someone to get an award for this.

The plot needs to be reworked. It started very interesting, but around page 350 in began to be a bit tedious. But the main idea is quite good and the science too.
