4.0 von 5 Sternen Very good but also (unfortunately) flawed 31. August 2014
Von R. Herz - Veröffentlicht auf
Just finished listing to Time Out of Mind: The Lives of Bob Dylan, by Ian Bell. It is a really good, well-written book on the 2nd half (post-60's) career of Bob Dylan. Bell seems to have pulled up every available fact on the artist & tries hard to put the events in his career in context of things happening in America. But Bell has an incredible bias against some of the music Dylan made and against God, religion, and conservative America, and it unfortunately affects some of his judgments; the other flaw in the book is what I would call the "smartest kid in the room" syndrome, in which Bell criticizes song choices made by Dylan in his albums (this was a great album, but it could have been greater had he done what i think he should have done!). A third problem with the book, though it doesn't limit its completeness, is that the author clearly does not understand Dylan the artist or the man. Dylan's failure to conform to what Bell thinks he should be is a problem -- because it is treated as a failure. If you can get past those sticking points, this is a valuable bio with good pointers to some of Dylan's music I had not listened to previously.

This author doesn't seem to understand Dylan as an "artist" even though he continually refers to him as such. There are some interesting insights into Dylan's later work and career but lacking a sympathetic tone for the man himself and what he chooses to create. A bit too biased and judgmental. Ultimately I bought this book to find out details about Dylan's later albums (Time Out Of Mind - Tempest) and found there wasn't much there except the authors biased reviews. He only speaks in depth about the few songs he finds interesting and seems to think the reader doesn't want to hear about the entire album. Not enough for someone who knows these albums intimately. I get the feeling the author prefers the early stuff and Dylan's later works are simply judged against the earlier style. I actually prefer the music since Time out Of Mind was released so I was disappointed. There are however, a lot of interesting subjects brought to light; the plagiarism topic and Christianity in Dylan songs, were very revealing. Ultimately I believe Dylan's later career deserves a lot more discussion with a more sympathetic attitude.

It is difficult to pan this book. Ian Bell, as in his previous book on Dylan, is a wonderful writer, with great insights into his subject and a meticulous sense of research. Having read just about everything on Bob Dylan, Bell's two books are undoubtedly among the better efforts I've read. However, as another reviewer has pointed out, it is also easy to be dissuaded by Mr. Bell's constant slide into nasty, subjective insights into Dylan and into other artists Dylan has collaborated with. It is admittedly impossible--and undesirable--to adhere to strict objectivity on Dylan and his work. Critical insights are appreciated, especially when they are written with the lucidity and dexterity that Mr. Bell possesses. Nevertheless, many readers--and i include myself--are going to be irritated by his constant slicing into Dylan's career and other artists Dylan obviously esteems. To some extent, this criticism holds true for Clinton Heylin's works, though Heylin doesn't extend himself so far and so frequently into such nasty attacks. The book could have used some editing and shortening, particularly with regard to the elements pointed out in this review. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the experience of engaging with Ian Bell's lively and expressive voice. Lots of excellent points here make this a worthwhile read, more so for the reader who already has a significant knowledge of Dylan. At least the knowing reader can disagree with the author, which will happen, I think, with some frequency. For anyone who hasn't read up on Dylan, there are better openings.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Best on Bob (2) 28. Januar 2015

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
If Dylan amazes you, inspires you, infuriates you, confuses you or speaks to you, here you will find the driving forces of the life behind the work. The portrait is Cubist, and invites the reader to revisit Dylan's entire body of work through the various perspectives of his 'life of imagination'. Ian Bell is knowledgable, neither uncritical nor awed by genius, but ultimately sympathetic in his understanding of this giant of late 20th Century popular culture.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Great read….in spite of the author! 3. März 2015
Von Richie Costa - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Ian Bell seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of sociopolitical events that may or may not have shaped Bob Dylan (or Bob's multiple personas), but far too often he labours the points he tries to make, repeating himself over and over again. Ian also imposes his own tastes when it comes to judging Dylan's music, and the music of Dylan's contemporaries. He's quick to dismiss the music of The Grateful Dead, and doesn't seem to hold the singer/songwriters that Dylan supposedly "spawned" in very great esteem. As for Dylan's "Born Again" christian phase, Ian Bell's virulent atheism prevents him from taking this version of Dylan seriously (Ian goes on about this phase of Dylan's career ad-infinitum).

In spite of these criticisms, I still greatly enjoyed the books because Dylan's story (or should that be stories? which ones can be believed?) is so fascinating, and I will devour anything that tries to shed light on an enigmatic, charismatic genius whose songs have been a part of my life for over 50 years
