In his first major publication for four years (excepting the smaller, project-led Arch and Wall), Andy Goldsworthy examines the complementary dimension in his work to the sheer physicality of Stone and Wood. The recent work included here is at once new and recognisable: an illustrated chronology by curator and long-time admirer Terry Friedman reveals themes that he has revisited and variegated over 25 years, and to which time has lent an increasingly influential angle, while remaining rooted in the British landscape. The creation of a work a day connects up his life in a continuous artistic narrative, while his earthy materials often draw on centuries of artisan heritage, while embracing seasonal change. The issue of power is fundamental to his working: there is a sense in which he plays God with the potential of his resources, and for the observer, some of the magic lies in the split moment when one sees his instilled order without mental recourse to his hand. The effect can be strikingly epiphanic. At the other end of the spectrum, his communion with the elements puts him at their mercy, subjugating to their will, and investing his creations with an unpredictability fundamental to his intention. Snow melts, ice collapses, clay cracks, wind blows; he is "nurturing" rather than "forcing" a form into being.
The photographic records are sublime, and vital to his ephemerality, whether in Montreal, Digne, Nova Scotia, Holland, New Mexico or Cornell. The accompanying text, a continuing dialogue for Goldsworthy, explores still further his familiar conceits, though diary excerpts give evidence of the toil behind the beauty, and bring out the unpredictability of his work, from which he unflaggingly draws inspiration, whether on a beach, in a river, in a wood, or in a gallery. Whether measured in minutes or eons, time is a good friend of British artist Andy Goldsworthy's. He spends long, solitary days outdoors in all kinds of weather, doing things like piecing together many, many yellow leaves to create a brilliant band of color at a river's edge in upstate New York or stacking small pieces of ice on the Nova Scotia coast to build a sculpture in the compact shape of an ancient stone monument. Threatened by a strong gust of wind, the incoming tide, or a sudden rise in temperature, these are fugitive works comfortably in synch with the natural rhythms of growth and decay.
Other works of his are longer-lasting. In walls made of stacked stones with hollowed-out oval "chambers" the size of his body--which he began building in 1999 in Lancashire, England--Goldsworthy makes reference not only to the shapes of graves in a nearby church but also to his personal history in the region and the enduring qualities of a rugged landscape.
Goldsworthy is the rare artist who can describe what he does in simple, concrete terms that nonetheless reveal his larger vision. Time is a very satisfying collection of 500 photographs, nearly all taken by him, that document the creation and subsequent mutations of his work. These evocative images are illuminated by excerpts from the diaries he kept as he created five projects in Europe and North America in the '90s. He discusses what it's like to explore an unfamiliar landscape, assess how the elements will work for and against him, and perform what are essentially a set of experiments. In diesem Buch gib's deutlich mehr Text als in anderen Goldsworthy-Büchern. Dies sind ganz überwiegend Tagesbuchnotitzen (alles im englischen Original) vom Künstler selber. Trotzdem sind die über 200 Seiten zu über zwei Drittel mit Photos bestückt. Die Werke des Buchs sind zur selben Zeit entstanden wie der (seht gute) Film "Rivers and Tides". Sehr, sehr schönes Buch, in dem man viele Stunden schmökern kann. Wenn man Landart auch nur ein bisschen mag, kann ich das Buch sehr empfehlen! Und sonst auch... S.

Ich finde Andy Goldsworthys Kunst absolut genial; sowohl die Werke die er geschaffen hat, und die sehr schön fotografisch dokumentiert, als auch die Gedanken zu seine Kunst, Zeit, die Natur, etc. sind sehr inspirirend. Dieses Buch war das erste das ich von Goldsworthy gekauft habe, weil es ziemlich günstig ist. Es hat mir begeistert, da nicht nur die Werke sehr schön reproduziert werden, sondern auch seine Gedanken und sein Arbeitsprozess zeigt. Es ist zum Teil auch sehr persönlich. Ich kann dieses Buch jedem Natur- und Kunstliebhaber nur empfehlen!

This is my absolute favorite of his books. As usual with his art Andy Goldsworthy manages to make things visible that are there and yet invisible to the casual eye. It almost generates an urge to rush out and try to do some "artwork" oneself (or at least imitate his art).
