4.0 von 5 Sternen Great Technical History of the Tiger Tank 31. Dezember 2007
Von Iva Buch - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
The Tiger Tank was one of the most recognisable tanks from the Second World War, and even today there is still a fascination with this beast that has lead to many books on the topic.
This is one of those books that is very different in it s offering on this vehicle, in fact it is a technical manual on the Tiger and its variants.
If you ever wanted to know about the type of engine, gearbox, tracks or turret manufacture, then this is for you.
The book is packed with a large amount of closeup photos of various parts of the tank, production changes, and line drawings of the various designs.
All variants are covered including the Jagdtiger, Elephant and Sturmtiger to name a few and even some designs on the drawing board when the war finished.
If your interest is the Tiger Tank battalions and its fighting history then this is not for you.
However if you wanted to know why the final drives were brittle, or engine was underpowered it is a good compliment to any Tiger history. It goes along way to tell why the Tiger although a powerful weapon was extremely complicated to keep running on the battlefield and why so many were destroyed by their crews.
Finally there is written in english for the first time the Tigerfibel, or Tiger manual as approved by Guderian which was issued to Tiger crews.
This in itself is a good reason to purchase the book as at times the manual is very funny and entertaining.
This is great compliment to place alongside your combat historys of the Tiger Battalions.

As an addict about all things armor, I could not resist this book. Walter Speilberger is the Man when it comes to German Armor books, he pioneered technical books on German armor back in the 1970's. One of his "students" Thomas Jentz has also published very good, detailed books on the Tiger 1 and Tiger 2. Both are published by Schiffer have high glossy paper and are of high quality. So, which is better? I now have all three and a recommendation...

Speilberger combines Tiger 1 and 2 and varients in one book, now listing at $37.00 -Jentz wrote seperate books, each about $35.00. As you might guess, some of the photos are identical. The photos in this book are smaller, but there are more of them and there are more of the Tiger 1 & 2 in the factory. They are dark. The line drawings are in most cases, identical, the same artist did them both, but again, in this book they are smaller. Neither has color photos, a drawback to the would be modeler. In this book, there is a chapter called "TigerFibel", an English translation of the German tanker's manual of how to maintain & operate the Tiger 1. It's humorous, written to the simplest common denominator....interesting how some things in tanking do not change. Tons of data, statistics, charts on all versions & varients of Tiger 1 and 2.

You could buy Speilbergers work and be perfectly content and save money. But I prefer Jentz's books - the photos are better, including many of the interior, there are more line drawings, cut- aways and technical narrative. Which you would expect since he uese two volumes to Speilberger's one. This book stands perfectly well on its own. Speilberger is the teacher, the mentor - which is why I was a little disappointed in this book. I do not recommend you buy all three, unless you are bitten by the armor bug and "have to have it".

4.0 von 5 Sternen Tigers all! 19. Mai 2009

O.K. Now this is a special entry in the Spielberger series. If your thing is the development of the Tiger series of weapon systems then this could be for you.I have not seen T.Jentz books on the Tiger but I can't beleive they could be any better at presenting the given material. The pictures of the assembly lines at Henschel and Porsche are truly amazing if a little dark.Who took them anyway? These tanks were very secret afterall!Anyway, again, if you are looking for unit histories and Tiger tactics then try Schneiders "Tigers in Combat" by all means the best on that subject, with great pictures. If you are into the tech stuff then Spielberger is for you.Chapters on Elefant,Jagdtiger and Sturmtiger round out the Tiger 1 and 2 material. As is standard for this series the drawings by Doyle make for a very nice book. 5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautifully made book giving the engineering history of Tiger Tank devlopment 25. Januar 2014
Von John Noble - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
Firstly this book is very well made with lovely heavy glossy paper.

It gives an in depth description of the birth of the Tiger and all the engineering developments that followed. It lists many drawings and photographs of the tanks during there (constant) development process and all the failures and fragility of it as well.

I've heard Lentz's 2 volumes gives even greater detail but for me this was more than adequate.

My only niggle and it's small is that it appears to have been a translation from the German and the translator was an American so engines are described as "motors" and the like. That aside I thoroughly recommend it for anybody interested in the engineering of this vehicle.

It does not give accounts of the Tiger in action so if you are after tales of derring do and an account of the vehicle's exploits in battle then this is definitely not the book for you. It was precisely what I was looking for though and I enjoyed it immensely
5.0 von 5 Sternen Tiger Tragic 18. August 2011

[...]

I must admit that I am a bit of a Panzerkampfwagen VI tragic. When I first became aware of this book I had to buy it. I am an avid scale modeller and it is my favourite historical subject. The book clearly defines the timeline and the history of the Tiger I and II. It discusses the changes made to the tanks during their developement and proposed changes and modifications that never came into being as the war came to an end first. The book gives a good insight into the technical aspects of the tank and should be condidered a valuable resource for those interested in the developement and implementation of the tank. Most images in the book are of a reasonable quality and the line drawings I found to be very good. The inclusion of the TigerFibel translated into english really adds to the book as it gives you glimpses of how the crews were tarained and the strengths of this legendary armoured giant. If you are into World war Two Allied armour this may not be the book for you.
