"Cornwell's themes of body image, abuse, and the danger and pleasure found in relationships of all kinds emerge organically through the book's visceral, disturbing, and often lovely imagery."
Publishers Weekly, starred review

"[A] graceful debut novel. . . The narrative shimmers and haunts, and will appeal to readers who don't typically like fantasy."

"Cornwell seamlessly weaves together three distinctive narrative voices to tell a completely original story. . . [Tides] offers a valuable message of acceptance."

"A satisfying mix of folktale, mystery, and family drama, this eerie story will leave readers with the distinct impression that Gemm's island home has a bottomless supply of heartbreaking tales of love and loss."
The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"A haunting, atmospheric, intergenerational tale of the "inbetween," suffused with selkie lore."

"Subtle themes of turning weakness into strength and threaded throughout the story and ultimately create a nuanced debut novel. . . . An insightful and compelling work."
School Library Journal

"Longing for the beyond vies with the deep bonds of love, home, and family in Betsy Cornwell's dreamlike and heart-wrenching novel, and her fresh, delicate lyricism conveys her characters' struggles with compelling power. A truly beautiful debut!"
Sarah Porter, author of the Lost Voices trilogy

Tides is a rich, taut, suspenseful, and funny exploration of two worlds, selkie and human.  It's full of mystery but it's also so fully imagined that a reader can jump right in.  Betsy Cornwell is a terrific new talent with a boundless imagination.”
Valerie Sayers, author of Who Do You Love and Brain Fever

Fictional Novel 29. April 2013
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts ( Was ist das? )
"Tides" was written for young adults but was thoroughly enjoyed by this older adult. Noah and his sister Lo go to spend the summer with their Grandmother, Gemm, on a remote island. Noah is looking forward to working with his mentor as an internist at the Marine Science Research Center. Lo just wants some quiet time to draw and paint. Neither had thought of true adventure or life changing events happening over the summer but after this summer, neither will ever be the same again.

Gemm is the keeper of the lighthouse as was her mother before her. Gemm had let the life of a top model before returning to the island and her first love. Noah, had never dated as he was totally focused on achieving good grades. His only dream was to be a marine biologist. Lo, who was adopted from China, battled bulimia. They were both entranced by their grandmother's fairy tale story of Selkies.

Noah liked to run every day after work. On one of his runs on Star Island (an adjacent island) he heard a splash and a groan. He raced to the side of the small cliff and saw a young girl who appeared to be drowning. He immediately went to rescue her only to discover she was naked and not drowning. Mara appeared to be about his age and very pretty with dark hair like his sister's. After some embarrassing moments, they began to talk and Noah discovered he had no trouble talking with her. He had never had a female friend.

Mara had many secrets of her own that were slowly revealed to both he and Lo. The grandmother also had a few secrets. The story weaves in and out of each of the individual lives and portions of the story are told from each of their perspectives. By the end of the story, all of their secrets have been revealed.

This is a beautiful piece of fiction with magic mixed in. I am hoping for a sequel to the story.

Magical. 26. August 2013
Von L. Perry - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts ( Was ist das? )
I was hooked (and completely in sympathy) from the first sentence, "No one is happy in the in between, not even selkies." From that moment, I knew this book would have voice in my life.

It's really a magical seeming world that woven here, with mysteries and lore and relationship of genuine emotion, affection and conflict. It stirs the unique places of the soul and lures them into...new, awake and respectful places.

Lovingly done. A+. Recommend.

Tides' Characters Are More Than Human 11. August 2013
Von Rocky Cerebellum - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
The characters in Tides are "savory" in a positive way that is the opposite of the way that characters in some tales can be unsavory. Cornwell's characterizations go beyond the living beings to the water around the Isles of Shoals, to the islands' rocky shores, to the house, kitchen table, and window that so brought me _into_ the story immediately. I felt that I had sat at that table and looked out the window. I had seen the view there and felt the ambitions of the characters seeing the land and ocean outside. The multiple points of view wove disparate threads into a magical tapestry that I would like to hang on my wall!

Much Deeper than I imagined 29. Juli 2013
Von Jennifer Miller - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts ( Was ist das? )
This book is a little difficult to give an adequate summary of. Tides is about two teenagers that spend the summer with their grandmother on the Isles of Shoals. Their grandmother, Gemm, is the lighthouse keeper. Noah is an excellent student who is working with his mentor in marine biology. Lo is an artist that just wants some peace and quiet. From here, the mythology of the selkies takes off. We get to know another character, Mara, and the from there the secrets begin to come out. Each character narrates their own emotions. Each one has their own issues to deal with and each one has an individual journey to go on. The reader is just there as a witness. Discussing some tough themes of adoption, eating disorders, homosexuality, and coming to terms with identity, this story takes on a far older sense than the age it was written for. While not shying away from the subject matter, I would encourage parents and teachers to be aware of the content and open to discuss any questions that are brought up. Tides is a positive book that shows amazing growth amongst all four characters. While the connections between each characters journey could have been tighter, their individual stories were more than enough for me.

Fairy tale legends 16. Juli 2013
Von Scientist.H - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
'Tides' is a well-written compelling work that draws you in. The imagery makes you feel as if you wanted to be a part of the story and the fairytale mist over the story is enchanting.

This fairytale leaves you wanting to read more with its generous twists and turns. I liked that the focus wasn't an obsessive love story for once. I'm tired of reading about girls who's lives begin to fall apart when their boyfriend leaves. Mara is a strong girl who knows how to throw a punch. It's always a nice change from the typical knight in shining honor male savior types.

There are many topics that will leave you wondering about whether they should be accepted the way they are. But think about the diverse and open world we live in. Betsy makes the reader feel every emotion her characters feel and the love that grows from the pages leaves you no doubt that love knows no boundaries and will never be kept from anyone.

The love story is young, innocent and curious. I love stories about legends and you won't be let down. I am excited for the sequel and just to be cliche, I hope it goes into a happily ever after ending.
