This book talks about "forgotten" areas in Afghanistan and Pakistan and the way people live there. Even though, they are very poor, they welcome and help a climber who had failed the attempt to climb K2 and got lost. And seeing their poverty, this climber, Greg Mortenson, promises to come back later and build a school for them. It is amazing what he is going througn, not only to round up the money for this school, but later, what time, energy and patience he puts into this project. He doesn't stop at one school, but perseveres and flies back and forth from the USA to that area and goes on building other schools, centers for women, etc. He sees education as a means to fight terrorism, as children who are educated will not become terrorists. He ventures into dangerous places, especially after 9/11 and sees the terrible cruelty with which the Taliban operated.
It is just incredible what this one person has started and what he has accomplished.
A lot of people have worked for peace and done a lot, but Greg Mortenson has done and sacrificed so much that he is definitely my hero in this area !
