Kurzbeschreibung

Andrew Tilmore, Lord Preston, owns three shipping companies, a diamond mine, and his own castle. He knows Portuguese, Hindi, Mandarin, and Morse code, and his assets net thirteen million. But the financial prodigy dubbed “The King of Threadneedle Street” wants the one prize money can’t buy: his childhood sweetheart.

Alysia Villier can’t decide if it’s worse having Andrew’s father in control of her inheritance or Andrew in control of her heart. He’s ruined her for any other man, but she simply can’t give in to him. Andrew is destined for great things—marrying a courtesan’s daughter isn’t one of them.

Keeping Alysia away from eager suitors is a cross-continental quest for Andrew, and he won’t be stopped by his old-fashioned family or the disapproval of the ton. He’s a man with the power to play newspapers and investors like pawns, tumble world markets and incite riots…but can he win the biggest gamble of his life?

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Bestselling author Moriah Densley sees nothing odd at all about keeping both a violin case and a range bag stuffed with pistols in the back seat of her car. They hold up the stack of books in the middle, of course. She enjoys writing about Victorians, assassins, and geeks. Her muses are summoned by the smell of chocolate, usually at odd hours of the night. By day her alter ego is your friendly neighborhood music teacher. She lives in Las Vegas with her husband, four children, and two possibly brain-damaged cats. Moriah has a Master’s degree in music, is a 2012 RWA Golden Heart finalist, 2012 National Reader’s Choice Award winner in historical romance, and ’12 NRCA “Best First Book” finalist.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Breathtaking! 17. April 2013

I had the privilege to read Moriah Densley's new historical romance before
its release! THE KING OF THREADNEEDLE STREET is a beautiful story of tenderness and passion! I honestly give her 7/5 stars! It's a pure pleasure to read! A real beauty of words. A little gem to discover! Here is my review:
It's a beautiful historical romance set in 1871 England
I discovered Mariah Densley's books on a blog and I found her first book "Song for Sophia" amazing! To my surprise! Again, I read a beautiful story very well written. Her two charming characters will make you fall in love with them. Already, she has become a great writer. Ms. Densley has a talent that stands out. Andrew Tilmore, Lord Preston, owns three shipping companies, a diamond mine and his own castle. But he also wants his childhood sweetheart!
Alysia is the daughter of his father's mistress and the daughter of an infamous courtesan. She learned the craft of courtesan from her mother but does not want to follow in her footsteps. She was, also, Andrew's childhood sweetheart and was ruined by him for any other man. Alysia woks as a housekeeper, a lady's companion but society sees her as a born to be courtesan and a mistress. She was also artist who loved to draw and paint. Andrew's father was her guardian and in control of her inheritance. When Andrew comes back in her life, he realizes that he always loved her. His quest is to keep her away from other men. She sees him as a beautiful Gallic warrior and a dreamer. He will try everything to charm her into his life and to keep her for himself as a mistress or a wife. Without thinking of the consequence for Alysia, he let think his friends, that he had bedded her. To protect her, Andrew offers her his house, but she refuses. Andrew's father, well aware of his son's love for her, wants to get rid of her and offers to find, for her, another benefactor to marry. It seems, she has to choose between dissapearing or have a marriage of convenience. She has to find a way to stall until she gets her inhiritance. But, the sexual chemistry between Andrew and Alysia ignites into flames. I prefer not to reveal more and let you, the readers, discover yourself the intrigue. I highly recommend Moriah Densley's book! She is an excellent writer and one of my favorite author! She knows how to write beautiful words full of charm, tenderness and seduction. So nice to read, that you cannot see the time go by. Moriah's books never disappoint me!

4 1/2 stars

What a delectable surprise! This was, hands down, the most compelling and original romance I've read in a long time. An endearing and beautifully crafted tale of childhood friends turned forbidden lovers.

As a hero, Andrew (Lord Preston) is an ingenious loose cannon. Temperamental yet witty and affable, he is a quintessential Tony Stark-like financial prodigy. (Why yes, I did just invoke the name of a comic book anti-hero in reference to a Victorian-era romance.)

Alysia is an immediately sympathetic heroine--smart and savvy, but at the same time despairing in a selfless sort of resignation. Despite her disdainful societal station, and her closely related self-regard, she maintains a steely sense of dignity.

Both suffer from the enslaving expectations of a merciless caste system, along with the all too realistic consequences of Andrew's current recklessness and past indiscretions.

Densley's style is enticingly sensual yet tasteful--palpable emotional depth is blended with reverent attention to tactile details. The languid, consistent pacing gives the reader time to savor the prose. And the depiction of the nineteenth century British stock market was fascinating and clearly well researched, if not a bit over this reader's head. A cast of memorable side-characters offers hope of interconnected future stories. The only drawback I personally perceived was that we see very little of Andrew's parents, his mother in particular, and so her motives and personality may come off a bit more caricature.
As the story itself spans a roughly 3-year period and involves a bit of travel and chase, there are chapters in which the reader will languish along with the separated protagonists. But the ultimate payoff is soul-touchingly worthwhile.

All in all, I'm pleased to declare that my first taste of Moriah Densley's work will not be my last!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Too Sweeping an Attempt 16. Dezember 2013

What I liked: Love the premise of this book. Also, the author writes with passion and enthusiasm, and will no doubt go on to become very good.

What I didn't like: The plot descended into chaos. The author tried to encompass European politics, English upper class social mores, the life of a bastard daughter of nobility, the economics of the time, and a romance. This was too big a scope for her abilities, and the book ends up being a patchwork of mismatched stories.

The characters are a mystery. The author did not build in pieces of their character, we're just suddenly presented with faits accomplis. Why was the hero's mother so set on his marriage to a slut? We never find out, except for one vague reference that she had hurt feelings. Why is she also so lazy that the heroine ends up doing all her work on the estate and house? We don't know.
Why is the hero's father so obtuse that he never explains anything about his motivations to either her or the hero?
Why doesn't the hero warn his sister her affianced husband is a man-slut and won't be faithful in any way? That really bothered me, saying much about his character, or lack of it.

Actually, the hero is childish in the extreme. He expects the heroine to just go along with everything he comes up with, including treating her like a slut in public at one point so other men will leave her alone. Worse, she does it. He also causes such a huge uproar in his business that there is rioting on the London docks, and a huge loss of jobs. He evidently has absolutely no compassion for the working people affected by this huge debacle.
That is where I quit reading.

This is really a very good story and out of the ordinary for the genre. The hero is not just in lust - he's in love and his feelings for the heroine remain constant. While over the course of years he is involved with other women sexually he is not promiscuous and never tries to use his experience to make her jealous. His mission is to keep her safe even if it involves keeping her far away from him for long periods of time. She buys into his family's belief that she will damage him if she marries him but she is not a twit about it. The level of angst over their situation is manageable by both of them and the reader. My only negatives about this story are that it is a bit over long and the couple are both very young for the level of power and financial intrigue the hero engages in from the beginning as well as the responsibility the heroine has for an estate while still in her teens. Those are rather minor points and in no way are reasons to avoid this book.

Andrew, Lord Preston, aka "The King of Threadneedle Street" has been in love with Alysia "Lisa" Villier since he was child. While Alysia loves him back, a marriage between the two is unthinkable because of Alysia's parentage; she's the orphaned daughter of his father's mistress. It does not help that his father is Alysia's guardian and does not look upon Alysia as a favorable match for his son. And if it wasn't enough, Alysia loves her "Drew" so much she can't think of marrying him, putting her happiness before his, and then ruining his social standing and the love they have for each other.

Talk about stubborn! Both Andrew and Alysia are stubborn to their cores. I loved how defiant Andrew was of everyone wen it came to Alysia. He remained persistent long beyond Alysia, who'd already given up on them ever being together and tried as much as possible to make sure they didn't. I loved and hated how honorable Alysia was. Loved because she thought of Andrew's needs first and hated because she had to deny and hurt both him and herself to do it. Both embodied a virtue I value highly and try to emulate: integrity.

The chemistry between Andrew and Alysia was scorching. I don't know how she did it, but Moriah Densley found a way to make the book feel like it as NC-17 while having PG-13 material. I had to stop reading and fan myself a few times. Another part of the book I really enjoyed was Andrew's knowledge and working of the stock markets. He actually had fun and used his smarts to get what he wanted both financially and personally.

As loathe as I was to put this book down I really do wish it had been longer. It was great to see more of Sophia, Wil, and the rest of the gang from Song for Sophia, but I have so many questions left unanswered How did the famed courtesan meet Alysia's father? And how did her mother meet Lord Courtenay, Andrew's father? I would've also loved to have read more about Andrew and Alysia as children and Alysia's intteractions with her father, but these sort of things tend to happen when you fall in love characters and you don't want the magic to end when the book is over.

After two books and a novella, I'm not sure which beloved character will get their story told next in the Rougemont series but I will be eagerly awaiting it's arrival.
