Amazon.com

"These are the times that try men's souls," begins Thomas Paine's first Crisis paper, the impassioned pamphlet that helped ignite the American Revolution. Published in Philadelphia in January of 1776, Common Sense sold 150,000 copies almost immediately. A powerful piece of propaganda, it attacked the idea of a hereditary monarchy, dismissed the chance for reconciliation with England, and outlined the economic benefits of independence while espousing equality of rights among citizens. Paine fanned a flame that was already burning, but many historians argue that his work unified dissenting voices and persuaded patriots that the American Revolution was not only necessary, but an epochal step in world history.

Pressestimmen

“No writer has exceeded Paine in ease and familiarity of style; in perspicuity of expression, happiness of elucidation, and in simple unassuming language.” —Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Paine's greatness lied in his ability to take the abstract ideas of the American Revolution and make them graspable by all of his time, while infusing them with the moral passion that they truly deserved. Paine is one of the great masters of ideas taken into action.

Complex topics, like government being an agent of retaliatory force, for example, were made clear enough that whatever one's ability, one could grasp the idea being discussed, a marvel considering the challenge. 225 years later, the power of his language still speaks to us today though his analysis of the English constitution and his case for an independent American republic.

Thomas Paine is required reading for any student of America who wishes to understand the ideas from which America was made real.

Thomas Paine, in plain, understandable English, wrote one of the finest works whose mission was to persuade readers to the author's view. What a great rallying cry "Common Sense" is! It was not meant to be scholarly or obtuse, it was meant to merely convey... well.. common sense. At this, it succeeds admirably. My favorite argument is that in which Paine refutes those who are reluctant to break away from our mother country. Paine basically states that no one would be obliged to stick by a parent who abuses her child Paine then proceeds (by citing examples) to show how England, as the mother country, was abusive to her children, the colonies. Absolutely brilliant! Well over two centuries later, it is still highly readible.

This book simply has to be read. And carefully: then it becomes apparent that the work started around 1776 has not in fact been finished, and it perhaps can never be finished. The tyranny and arrogance of the British Government then is now replaced by tyranny and arrogance of the communistically oriented governments in the US itself. This work may now be more actual than ever since the 18th century. By the way, perhaps no author had ever so much slander levelled against him as had Thomas Paine. There is no need to add to that, as a poster here had done. That eg. "the great" Ted Roosevelt found it fit to lie regarding Paine does not absolve us of responsibility of tracing the actual facts. Paine had been reported as "one of the most pleasant companions I have met with for an old man" by a roommate, at the time when he had all the reasons to be bitter towards humanity, which had for the most part betrayed him. Please read Thomas Paine, and read carefully.
