This is not a story about cutting off body parts to survive, or going to brink of existence in an unforeseen twist of fate. This is an adventure born from watching old movies and programs of people living and travelling in the Alaskan/Canadian wilderness. It is a story of a solo quest to get to Alaska by kayak with very little experience, surviving in the wilderness along the way; it’s a story of learning to believe in yourself when some others think you’re crazy, of putting one foot in front of the other each day, and of trusting your wits to get you out of a situation if it all goes wrong. Some describe it as crazy, some say it’s a spirit quest. All I know is that I needed to do it, so I did.

There is a youtube video diary of the trip you can check out here

If its a bit long for you here is the teaser video

I met Danny the day he came to Prince Rupert after the kayak trip this book is about. He told us about his idea and how it became reality, and this is exactly what you can read in this book. The story of a guy who got laughed at, because he travelled along the inside passage with his hammock, some google map prints, a 2 dollar compass and a dream. No phone, no connection to the outside world.
This is a trip I wish I would dare to do, an inspiration to anyone chasing their dreams. When I concentrated, I almost felt like being back in the Pioneer hostel, listening to Danny telling us about his story. Thanks for sharing this adventure, Danny!

I found "This Is Me" by Danny Wilks on the reading list of a friend and having read a few `wilderness' stories in the past myself I was intrigued enough to buy the book.
In it Danny Wilks describes his journey along the Canadian Coast to Alaska in his kajak with very limited access to civilisation and its luxuries, few encounters with other people, his interaction with nature and wildlife and not least the US Immigration authorities - a species of their own
The book is written in a basic English, as if told over a beer in a bar, which is probably my only real criticism. Having said that, the author forewarns the readers about this and compared with some comparable best sellers, like "The Long Way Round" by Ewan MacGregor and Charlie Boorman, Wilks' prose is certainly not inferior to some of his fellow wilderness writers.
The story however is a very good one and an honest account of his journey. I loved the sense of reality Wilks created in his writing, something that is missing from the many TV programmes aiming to give us that sense of `experience' by filming people in the wild, when the viewer knows there is a crew behind the camera.
This is a story as it has happened, not all Hollywood / Jack London style dramatic but quite an adventure with a lot of anecdotes and ideas that make this book a very worthwhile read for those who want to read a real story.

I really enjoyed reading about Danny's kayaking trip from Vancouver to Alaska. If I have any criticism at all it is it is too short! Danny has a very easy writing style and having thoroughly enjoyed the video on You Tube, reading his book gives a greater insight to this very humble man.
Thanks for sharing your experiences Danny.

As the writer suggested, writing is not his profession but his enthusiasm and light hearted honesty over come any short comings in his writing ability. Interesting, fun story to read if you enjoy the outdoors and love experiencing it through the eyes and heart of a good natured non-tech, fun loving person.

I am a kayaker and found Danny's youtube video about his trip from Canada to Alaska very interesting. It's not just about being in the kayak but about the landscape and nature. This trip is about having a dream and following it. It's about doing things your own way, good or bad and learning from the experience. I read the book in an afternoon. I didn't want to stop reading because I felt like I was right there with him. It was an enjoyable trip. Danny tells you about the trip just like he was sitting across from you at the dinner table or in your living room. Thanks Danny for coming to visit me and letting me tag along on your trip.

The author starts the book apologizing for his lack of writing skill and then sets out to prove himself a liar, which he does. In clean, simple, direct prose Danny tells the story of a trip of a lifetime paddling an old sea kayak from Vancouver, BC to Ketchikan, AK a trip that, at least on paper, he was woefully unprepared for. He only had a little experience in a kayak, he couldn't read tide charts and his only maps were printouts from Google Earth but he did have the good sense to know his limits in the boat, a whole lot of grit, and a little bit of luck. Because he is such a humble, self effacing guy, the story is truly inspiring. You feel like"if he can do something like this, maybe I'm capable of great adventure too". I highly recommend it.
