The first US publication of a somewhat unsatisfactory second novel from Indonesian political dissident Toer (The Fugitive, 1990). Set during the last two years of the 19th century in then- Dutch-ruled Java (now Indonesia), Toer's story of Minke, a Javanese native and everyman of sorts (he has no family name by choice), was first told to the author's fellow political prisoners in the 1970's. Minke, a student and embryonic Javanese nationalist, has broken with his family, who seek advancement through the colonial system, and dreams of becoming a writer who will demonstrate to the world the great talents of the ``Native'' Javanese. But then, while he runs a furniture business on the side and studies, he is introduced to the mysterious Mellema family, who live in a splendid compound in the country. Here, he meets the delicate and beautiful ``mixed race'' girl Annelies, her boorish brother Robert, and their mother, the brilliant and forceful ``Native'' concubine Nyai. Prejudice against ``Natives'' is rampant, and as Minke becomes increasingly involved with Nyai's family intrigues and learns their history, he too becomes part of their tragic destiny. Victims of racial prejudice, Minke and Annelies--who defy convention and marry--are punished by the colonial authorities and must part when Annelies is banished to the Netherlands. A just indictment of the pettiness and cruelty of excruciatingly race-conscious colonialism--and Toer has vividly evoked a special time and place--but the story, unlike the far more subtle and universal The Fugitive, is too obvious a polemic. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Protagonist Minke is due all the honors of a Dutch high school graduate in his native Java. Though the 20th century is just dawning, he is a champion of science, technology, and openness amongst the many ethnic levels of Java's colonial society. Himself a Native, Minke marries Annelies, a Mixed-Blood daughter of an astute concubine, one whose owner has left her alone to develop and manage a vast business. When Minke moves in with Annelies and her mother, they form a family at once perfect within yet challenged from without by racial and legal threats that eventually destroy them all. Toer's novel is a beautiful archetype of the evils inherent in colonial and racially stratified societies. The novel was written during Toer's 14 years as a political prisoner, and his continuing city arrest in Jakarta is testimony to its power. Such extraordinary struggle has produced a novel worthy of its author's sacrifice.

Wow! This book is excellent, if I had to discribe it in one word it would be --POETIC-- Every sentence in this book has some sort of deep value, whether historical, poetical, or impressional. I have learned alot from this novel about the Javanese people and the Dutch colonial times in Indonesia. I am currently reading the rest of the quartet and it is just as fabulous as the first volume.

A beautiful and fun read. This book offers an uncanny combination of escapism and romance with social, historical and cultural commentary. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. It makes you think and feel...in a very effortless way.
It was fun being transported to Indonesia at the turn of the last century. I haven't read a book like this in a long time. Try it. You won't regret it. It has something for everyone.

The history of South East Asia is often misunderstood and misrepresented. By itself, this book stands as a classic love story of a timeless beauty. As an historical passage, this book brings home an understanding of the seeds of Indonesian nationalism. Anyone wishing to learn more about South East Asian history around the period of colonial rule and/or the struggles of a people against a cycle of abuse will find this story compelling, especially given the circumstances under which it was written. I loved the book from both the love story and historical perspectives.
