Ava Delaney calls herself a hybrid - a living, breathing human who happens to have vampire poison running through her veins. The only thing greater than her thirst for human blood is her capacity for guilt. She does her best to avoid the human world, for everyone's sake.

When Ava accidentally enslaves a human while saving him from a vampire, she realises she has to look for help setting him free. Despite her misgivings, she expands her world but finds herself dragged into a possible vampire civil war. With the help of some new friends with ambiguous loyalties, she tries to find a way to keep her human, and herself, alive.

At approx. 45,000 words, Thirst is the first in a 6-book urban fantasy series. Now comes with preview chapters of Taunt (Ava Delaney #2).

5.0 von 5 Sternen An Enjoyable Read: Old School Vampires with a Twist 13. Juli 2011
Von Brown Thumb - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I'll admit it. I downloaded this book when it was a free read, but I purchased the next book in the series, Taunt, because I enjoyed Thirst so much. It's so much fun to read about "old school vampires" who have fangs and don't sparkle. The main character, Ava, is a troubled and flawed vampire hybrid who just wants to lead a "normal" human life. She comes from a dysfunctional family, something many of us can relate to, and tries very hard throughout both books to balance who and what she is, and still be a good person. I think Claire Farrell's work is a refreshing change from the typical vampire story that's out there. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A cozy little bloodbath 3. Dezember 2010
Von Joseph - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Ava Delainey is not a vampire, she's a hybrid (a daywalker created when her pregnant mother was bitten by a vampire, like Blade). But one night she stumbles fully into the paranormal world of psychic enslavement, magic spells, and clan wars. And everyone wants a piece of her.

The novella is well-written with plenty of action and several interesting characters, but the story could use a bit more focus. Too often the characters stand around to recap what just happened and argue about what to do next.

Thirst ends on strong note. Ava has a dark and twisted future ahead of her. I think Thirst will read better in a compilation with its inevitable sequels.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Refreshing! 30. September 2011
Von The Biff - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This was a surprisingly good story that I read in only a few hours; the kind where, after I finished, I immediately jumped on Amazon to buy the sequel (and leave a review). Unlike so many paranormal books these days, this didn't have even a hint of the Twilight taint. Well done, Claire Farrell! Ava is a believable character with a good sense of humor and a few quirks that make her unique, plus she isn't always A) the damsel in distress, or B) the supernaturally strong/brilliant/beautiful/wonderful/insert-fabulous-attribute-here, non-human arse-kicking heroine that makes men quiver with lust and bad guys quail in fear. Instead, she's a nice blend of the two, and that makes her a whole lot more relatable to us sort-of-brave average-looking people. The story itself is fast-paced, going back to days of yore by putting an unromantic spin on the whole vampire thing. Speaking of romance, if you're looking for sex, you won't find it here. Nary a lip-lock is found, which is refreshing for this genre. I highly recommend giving the book a go, particularly since it's currently free on Kindle.

4.0 von 5 Sternen a half-breed with a thirst for blood 21. September 2013
Von clarice - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Ava Delaney looks like a normal girl. She lives in a small apartment by herself and sells stuff online. Some would say she's a hermit. But she would say she's avoiding humanity. It's best for her and for everyone else. Avoiding humans means keeping them safe. She isn't exactly human. She's a half breed. A species thought to be nonexistent. Part human. Part Vampire. Ava has a beating heart like other humans, but the thirst of a vamp. It's this reason that she is hiding out from humanity. She doesn't want to be a monster.

One night Ava encounters a human being toyed with by a vampire. She doesn't want any other vampire to know she exists, since she isn't supposed to, but she isn't about to let the human die either. By saving Carl, she unknowingly enslaves him to herself. He is not himself anymore. He wants to be with her constantly and "feels" her need for things such as blood. He is a willing sacrifice, so to say. She, however, is not willing to drink blood. Since Ava can live on human food, that is what she does. She has to figure out a way to send Carl back home before she loses control.
After fighting within herself, Ava calls the only person who might be able to help her: her grandmother. They were not on the best of terms due to how her grandmother raised her. She had tried everything to get the vampire side of Ava out of her, including exorcisms and beating. She wanted nothing more than for Ava to be a normal girl. And after all these years, that is what Ava really wants too. But to save Carl she is going to have to start embracing the vampire side to deal with the odds. Now she is on the grid for two very powerful vampires at odds with each other and they both want her. And even though she has found some help, she doesn't know exactly who she can trust.

I love how Claire Farrell made a blended human/vamp with unknown powers. And we still don't really know all of what she can do after this first book. We are just starting to get a glimpse at her loner-type life she is living. She doesn't live really among the living or the dead. She is alone. Death and war in the vampire world is normal. But they are two things that Ava tries her best to avoid. Although she identifies more with the human side of her, she is forced to bring out the vamp in her to survive. And in order for her new "friends" to survive as well. Her worst fear is becoming a bloodthirsty monster.
After living alone for so long, Ava doesn't trust anyone easily, and with good reason. Between the past, and everyone after her now, how can she? But sometimes you have to do what you really don't want to in order to protect those around you. Ava thinks very little of her own self-preservation. In the end, she has to make a deal with the devil.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Huh, like the title better than the book. 6. März 2013

I thought the book was OK, the plot was a little weak and there were a lot of spelling mistakes. The characters were pretty good. I feel that she didn't revise her work. I liked the main character Ava, she had a clear personality. The Peter guy was confusing, as was Eddie. I don't think I want to read the second book. It just didn't seem as good as it looked.
Basically the main character Ava was turned like Blade was. Now she is being hunted by two different groups of vampires. Peter is like a slayer guy she meets or something. Then she meets like a sorcerer guy named Eddie but she doesn't know what he wants from her. I think it's confusing to the reader to understand all the jumbled ideas.
