Wieder ein raffiniert gestrickter Plot aus Hillermans Feder: Während Jim Chee zunächst nur einen dreist gestohlenen Grabungsbagger sucht und zwei ermordete Helfershelfer einer illegalen archäologischen Grabung findet, setzen Joe Leaphorn existentielle Sorgen zu: Nach dem Tod seiner Frau erscheint ihm das Leben sinnlos. Fürs erste ist er beurlaubt, und sein Pensionsgesuch hat er auch schon eingereicht. Da er das Nichtstun aber nicht erträgt, begleitet er einen alten Freund, der einer Vermisstenmeldung nachgeht - eine Archäologin ist verschwunden. Der Fall interessiert ihn, und interessiert ihn auch wieder nicht, aber da er es zu Hause nicht aushält und die Erinnerungen übermächtig werden, lässt er seinem "Jagdinstinkt" freien Lauf und geht der Sache nach.
Schließlich begegnen Chee und Leaphorn einander ausgerechnet im Missionszelt eines indianischen Erweckungspredigers (rein dienstlich, versteht sich), und bald stellen sie fest, dass es einen Zusammenhang geben muss zwischen den ermordeten Grabräubern und der vermissten Archäologin. Und dann ist da noch der alte Fuchs Harrison Houk, der irgendetwas verschweigt...
Wie gesagt, auch dieser Krimi ist raffiniert aufgebaut, ohne dass der Zufall über Gebühr strapaziert würde (eigentlich wird er überhaupt nicht strapaziert), und auch diesmal leben Handlung und Atmosphäre von den vielen Facetten im Leben der Navajos und den Konflikten zwischen den Kulturen, und die Figuren sind wunderbar plastisch gezeichnet, einfach überzeugend.
Hillerman rutscht niemals ins Klischee ab, im Gegenteil. Nur ein Beispiel: Ein schlechterer Autor hätte die Kochkünste von Leaphorns verstorbener Frau vermutlich in Tortillas gipfeln lassen (und wäre damit prompt in die Klischeefalle getappt); Leaphorn aber erinnert sich an ihren Sauerbraten...

A THIEF OF TIME - excellent reading for people who are interested in the following highly original mixture:
There is a. the classic plot of a detective novel, in which the reader and the two protagonists are trying to find out why Dr Eleanor Friedman-Bernal, a noted anthropologist, has disappeared.
There is b. the extraordinary "niche" which Hillerman has found for his characters. A THIEF OF TIME (and the other books in the series, which are loosely connected with each other) does not have the usual big city jungle as a setting, but the Navajo reservation in Arizona and New Mexico. Thus it is Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, members of the Navajo Tribal Police, who are trying to solve the case, at the same time offering Hillerman the opportunity to make the reader acquainted with Navajo culture and mythology.
And there is c. the beautiful landscape of the canyons, of bizarrely-shaped sandstone cliffs, of arroyos and washes, and of prehistoric sites of the Anasazi. This extraordinary setting not only serves as a background, but provides - together with the characters - the unique atmosphere which is so typical of Hillerman.
Last but not least, the two protagonists are not one-dimensional or "flat" characters. To the reader it seems as if they are real people with real problems: Joe Leaphorn, the older one, is trying to cope with the fact that his wife has suddenly died, and Jim Chee is not quite sure about his feel-ings for Janet Pete, a young (beautiful) Navajo lawyer - and vice versa.
Hillerman succeeds in capturing the reader's attention from the very beginning. And although the whodunit aspect, being central to the plot, is supposed to be in the foreground, it is actually - at least to me - of minor importance. The fascinating thing about this novel is the atmosphere created through the characters - Navajo Indians - and the setting - the American Southwest and the Navajo Reservation. Therefore: have fun!
PS. If you've ever been to the American Southwest (like I have), Hillerman makes you feel like hopping on the next plane and taking in that amazing landscape again.

As with most Hillerman formulas, we have separate mysteries that overlap in time and place. Almost retired with just a few days to go Lt. Joe Leaphorn, Navajo Tribal Police, is looking for a missing anthropologist Dr. Eleanor Friedman-Bernal who disappeared, leaving an extensively prepared meal in the refrigerator. And Officer Jim Chee looking for a missing back-ho that he was supposed to be watching due to a chronic thieving problem.
Now do not jump to conclusions. Hillerman thinly veils his mysteries and you can pretty much guess the conclusion. This time it is a waste to try. We get his colorful description of the four corners country. Also, we get an insight into Navajo culture. You may go a little potty with details.

Spellbinding!
Time well spent as you are swept away to the southwest! Hillerman takes you down the roads and over the hills so accurately, his novels could be used for road maps!
